Default wiper woes

I need to remove my wipers to alow me to remove the stabiliser struts to be refurbished. I started the job tonight but things are not going well.

The rusty strut.

Marked up the position of the wipers.

A selection of pullers.

I losened off the nut a few turns first but left it in place to give a bigger area for the puller to engage with, and then applied a lot of force. It did not pop, so I removed the puller to have a look and then tried to remove the nut.

The end result is the wiper is still fully attachhed and has not budged at all but the nut now spins on the spindle but will not come off.

Any suggestions.

Looks as if the wiper arm and spindle are suffering from 'galling' of the metals.
ACF50 is a good penetrating oil, dodgy area for heat to be applied.
The nut may have broken some spindle threads, prob have to be cut off.

Hi,
Some WD 40 overnight, remove the nut, then a very gentle tap with a hammer, only once on the spline, then wriggle the wiper arm side to side. this should allow you to simply lift the arm off.

Never had to use a puller ever on a wiper arm, Just mind that screen with the wrench.

Good Luck

I have never had any luck with those pullers on any car, they are prone to slip and often wont fit securely under the arm. I invested in a battery terminal puller, which is like a mini hub puller and it has proved very successful. I note that they are now listed as wiper pullers:
TRIDENT TOOLS T313100 WIPER ARM , ALTERNATOR BEARING AND BATTERY TERMINAL PULLER | eBay

I would endorse what others have said about plenty of penetrating oil.

I just ordered one of that type today, I now have it steeping in penetrating oil and will try again when it gets here.

I cut the nut with a dremel and was then able to prise it off.

This was the new tool that worked very easily to get the wiper arm off.

The spindle is a bit of a mess, I'm in two minds as to whether to tap this for a smaller size nut or look for a second hand wiper arm.

A tap creates the female portion and a die creates the male portion.
Use a Die first to chase the remaining threads. The threads look fairly course and should clean up enough to be effective. Also use a tap to clean the threads in the nut.
Good luck.

That spindle is likely to cause problems in the future as the thread looks beyond recovery with a die and the spline is badly corroded at the top. The wiper arm spline must be in an equally poor state?

A good used replacement wiper mechanism is a better option.

Not done much on the car today, its been snowing on and off since first thing.

I did put some rust eater on the spindle last night and took a wire wheel to it today, it has come up surprisingly well.

I also tried a fresh nut on the spindle and it took to the thread ok.

I may leave alone or use a die to take it down a size.
