XK8 5th Gear "Slip"?
Hi, I'm having a long term problem with my XK8 trans. When driving/cruising at say around 50-60mph, in 5th gear - if I accelerate lightly (not enough to downshift), the engine revs will climb 200-300 rpm before I get any "pull" from the trans - then it will "bite" and the revs will drop back down and car will drive as expected. If it was a manual stick shift it feels like the clutch is slipping or the clutch is depressed then released. Only seems to to happen in 5th at around 1800-2000 rpm. I recently had the common cracked valve body replaced by a specialist which sorted the clunk into R&D, but the "slipping" issue was present before this, and hasn't changed since? I'm aware of various problems with these boxes, but haven't read of anyone else with this issue. Any help much appreciated! TIA |
The year of your car would help as there are two types of boxes fitted over the years. It is a good idea to put your car details in your signature.

Hello there . . . I was just ready to add my . . . +1 to what Chris said, then add . . . "Guessing at your car is not just an issue of time-wasting. Any advice given against an incorrect guess could be downright dangerous" . . .
However, in looking at your profile, I note you are in GB and appear to have attempted to add the necessary to your sig. News is that it has not worked so perhaps you need help to do so. If so, go to main menu, User CP, Edit Sig, then type in details (year, model, engine, g/box etc). Remember to Save. Exit, go to your post, refresh and check. OK? So, for a '98 XK8, I am guessin a 4.0L V8, NA, with a ZF 5HP24 trans? But there I go guessing. Let's get your sig sorted, eh? Cheers, :icon_beerchug: Ken |
Thanks, Not sure why my sig isn't showing? Shows in all my other posts, and have edited as you suggested? Anyhow... 1998 XK8 125000 miles ZF5HP24 Transmission Ta |
Have you done a hard reset? Also I think there is an adaptations reset that can be done as well before more drastic measures.

As far as I was aware a hard reset does not erase the transmission module adaptive learning? Will give it a go anyway and let you know! Thanks |
