Default XKR 99' Headgasket/front suspension rebuild

Hello Jagmans,

Recently my headgasket failed on cylinder 1 giving misfire code and high pressure in the coolant system. Time for a headgasket replacement.
After some browsing on the internet and the advice from avos. I ordered the MLs type gaskets from jaguar and also the valve seals. All the other parts where ordered from Britishparts.

The car has a 240K km on the dail. After removing the heads i decided it was a good idea to also work on the front suspension as it is within good reach now :P
The heads are send of to a machine shop to be resurfaced and the valves reseated(not 100% necessary but iam not planning on going back in there any time soon).

While looking for parts i came along a lower pulley upgrade set that wil be installed later on.
Also there is a full custom cat back exhaust system being installed.

Cilinder one is pretty clean :P

Some carbon deposit, time to send them out for en resurface and clean

Strange that the ring is gone inwards, think it is the age of the composite pushing it inside....

Parts layout and the new pulley upgraded

Timing chains where done in 2006, looks fine :P

Time to clear out some corrosion, these cars are the worse... Mu 77 XJC is much better made :O

See the damage immediately adjacent to the fire ring.

That was coolant eating away at the gasket. Dexcool was
the specified coolant in your model year. The problem is
that Dexcool is a known plasticiser.

That's why the switch to MLS gaskets in later years.

Just a small note, for the AJ26 engine it was DOW D542 (Yellow) as standard not the Dexcool as you say. Jagman can tell if it was switched at some point, but I have no info on the coolant being responsible for the early head gasket failures.

Now when can you do it easily, why not change cam timings from
stock 125/115 to 110/118 or if you worry about emissions with sport
cats then 112/120. These would match better to new power range with bigger lower pulley.

Let's find out.

The OP lists the vehicle as a 1999 model year in Europe.

That is a 2000 model year vehicle in North America.

I think that makes it a AJ27 and a Dexcool year.

Genuine: Jaguar Partno_NCA2515AE_CAM COVER GASKET RH XK8 XJ8_David Manners Group with Alts
O.E : Jaguar Partno_NCA2515AE#_CAM COVER GASKET RH XK8 XJ8_David Manners Group with Alts
Aftermarket: http://www.jagspares.co.uk/Manners/p...o=NCA2515AE%2A

Normally I use their O.Es since they are basically same parts than genuine but not in Jaguar plastic bag. Very critical parts better to use just genuines. Some aftermarket cam cover gaskets have been reported to leak very easily.

Default Engine block

hey guys,

Iam cleaning the engine prior to installing the rebuild heads, I have MLS type gaskets en the original type gaskets. There are some markings in the block from the rings of the old gasket. Other than that they are very smooth. I dont want te remove any more than necessary ( more compression ) Also the MLS are much thinner than the composite gaskets. Maybe i will install the original to be safe.... i dont want te reopen the engine any time soon !
