Tyre recommendations for 1982/83 XJ-S in Adelaide?
 

Hi, I have searched the forums a couple of times but can't seem to find an answer.

I am in the market for some new tyres for my 1982 built XJ-S HE. I'm in Adelaide. Does anyone know which of the available options are the best ones?

Pirelli P5s seem a little hard to come by. GT Radial is an available option. One Kumho dealer says they don't make the right size, while another says they do. I have been told that some of the tyres made in this size are designed for light trucks.

I have been quoted on Hiflys (hmmm), Maxxis, and Toyo. I have been using Maxxis tyres on my daily drive and they seem good - I spend a lot of time on the freeway in wet weather. I'm still alive.

Any suggestions & feedback on these brands on this type of car are very welcome.

Tyres are fun now.

215/70 was the OE spec. Basically not easy to find at all now.

I ran 235/65 without issues on the stock "Starfish" alloys. They took us all the way around the Aussie coast road a few years ago (20000+kms) without a hiccup.

Tyrepower have always been able to sort something.

I found Goodyear Roadhugger last time the beast needed rubber.

Maaxxis are fine by me also, some of the fleet have them, and if they have the size would be a good choice.

Thanks again Grant. I know the owners of Tyrepower St Agnes plus a couple of other Kumho/various outlets. I might have to look into that other size. I did check out the tyre thread linked above, but hoping for some local knowledge as we seem to be a bit limited on brands compared to other countries. I'll let you know if I find anything that sounds good.

I'm leaning towards the Toyos because they're the most expensive I've been quoted (possibly flawed logic) but Maxxis could be a good option.

I was reading about the different size options on the other tyre thread, and I found these ones that I like the look & sound of in size 225/60R15.

I have used Potenzas a lot in the past (RE55S & RE11 on the track not road) & have been pretty happy with them. I am leaning towards this one.

The 215/70 15 is 26.9 diam, 84.3 circum, 752 revs/mile.
The 225/60 15 is 25.6 diam, 80.5 cicum, 787 revs/mile
The 235/65 15 is 27.0 diam, 84.9 circum, 747 revs/mile.

That 235/65 was listed on my 1985 tyre placard as an option.

I reckon that 225 will be too small, and the speedo error wil be a concern.

My S Types run 225/60 16.

Just my old opinion of course.

I did have heaps of hassles getting tyres in the day, and the LT was/is certainly not an option (as you know), and the load rating was, maybe still is, a big factor. A load rating of "98" rings a dim bell for the V12.

I recently put , for the second time , Champiro . After scrubbing Pirellis in 12,000 k's which cost me close to 4K on my XJR , I switched to these and only replaced them as they got to old. They have a 100% warranty for a faulty tyre , nice looking tyre seem to wear well and good road holding . May be worth looking at if they have the size you need ,almost forgot they are good price , got them from tyrerite (could be Tyreright )
