Default Tyres: What brands do you swear by? What type of tread you recommend?

Heh guys

I want to replace one of my rear tyres. Its a P235/60R15. The others arent too bad but one is a little borderline. Do I replace both rears at the same time or do you recommend doing the whole lot?

going to start tyre shopping tommorow. What brands do you guys swear by?

BF Goodrich? Toyo? Bridgestone? Dunlop?

I have a thing for the black tyre with white writing. what do you think that style looks like on an XJS?

Also what about tread and all that?

Am I overthinking this?

I have to treat the Goose right!

There seems to be a lack of choice for that size of tyre these days Paul.
I fitted 16" wheels to mine as there's a bigger choice. I believe Jag suggested Goodyear Eagle or Pirelli p600....will need to be high speed rated which ever tyre.
White lettering....hmmmmmmm if that's your thing . . . . .

cheers guys. yeah the current speed rating i have on at the moment is T (190km).

started looking online. noticed not a great deal in 235/60 for the 15inch rim.

Not in any real hurry I guess. just gonna start the search

So what about Brand names? Anything you guys would swear by?

Goodyear, pirelli, Michilen?

And what about fabric, are radial the most common now days?

I've had terrific luck with Michelin and BF Goodrich but, in truth, I'm hard pressed to recall ever having a truly bad tire of any brand.

Yes, for 235/60x15 your choices will be very slim. AFAIK only Pirelli and BF Goodrich offer that size.

White lettering is for musclecars or track cars. Not for classy GTs, IMHO.

Cheers

Oh and one last thing. When selecting tyres, is a change in width (say 235 to 225) going to affect your speedo, and what about aspect ratio of the side wall? (say 60 down to 55) I am told my XJS was originally brought out with 215/70 but as they are very hard to find now days she's changed over the years to the 235/60.

I just dont wanna mess up her speedo if I get something other than what she's fitted with now what I mean?

Thanks Doug

yeah i think the white lettering now is not gonna suit her. Been looking online and they seem to be just like you say.

Gotta keep her classy

Here's a great side by side comparison calculator with speedo error changes

Tire Size Calculator - Compare Tire Sizes

I'm running Falken 512's 225/60/15 on my 86 and really like the tire/profile/sidewall. I've ran a few others in the 225/70 or stock 215/70 and they look like an SUV tire from the side. Not a lot of choices in the 15 size. The Kuhmo LX platinum also has sizes to fit our cars in the right load/speed rating and the Dunlop Signature II.

Do your homework, whatever size you get make sure it has the same rolling circumference as the factory tires had, your computer & speedometer will remain accurate. I have had good results with Michelin, Pirelli, Continental, & Dunlop. Any high end tire should give you good service as long as you keep correct tire pressure, balance and rotate often. I have 16” wheels as standard with 225/60 ZR16 Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus.
Do some research on “tirerack dot com” for sizes and brands available, then go to some tire stores and look over the appearance of the different tire treads and sidewalls. After all that it boils down to whatever floats your boat…

If you have enough money, choose tires from 3 largest companies: Bridgestone, Michelin, Good Year. It is because they have to invest so much money using computer simulation to develop tires nowadays and a company which has large sum of money can develop better tires.
But I like Toyo, Falken and Pirelli though they are cheap.
At least if they are brand name tires you won't be disappointed. Avoid Asian (of course except Japan) tires .

Thanks guys. Goin window shopping today.

Gonna look at some Pirelli P600 to start the day, and go from there.

I thought Pirelli was a high end brand too?

Hi Paul. The BF Goodrich OE-size 235/60-15 Radial TA on my '92 have been on the car five years. They're white letter but mounted with letters turned in, and are S speed rated. I haven't tried to buy more but would go with these again because they are quiet, comfortable, and grippy and are wearing very well. My tire retailer says these tires will always be available in this size because a lot of muscle cars use them. I hope he's right.

Are your Starfish alloys 6.5 wide? My lattice are. The 235/60 looks nice and fat. My XJ6 has 205/70-15 Pirelli P4s on 15x6" pepperpots and I feel that it really under-tyred and needs the same combo as my XJS.

Previously I have had one set of Pirelli P44s on a Mazda MX6 and they were absolute crap in the wet and only lasted 30,000 miles.

tirerack.com is a good site on which to compare tire ratings side-by-side.

Guys appreciate the help heaps.

I shopped around today and got 3 different quotes from 3 different outlets.

The first guy, Bob Jane T Mart, offered 3 in the 235/60R15 and seemed very helpful, plus the place was very busy. The only brand i recognised or heard about was the Pirelli P600.

The second place, Tyre Jax, could only offer the Pirelli P600 for that size. No other option. Sheila seemed helpful enough and come over and checked out the Goose, and even gave my son a free Michelin man keyring! However, the place was practically empty and didnt seem as professional as the last joint. She asked the price of what the other bloke was offering for the P600 and she beat it by $7. Not bad.

The third place, Good Year Tyres, could only offer me some brand I never heard of, but seemed real helpful.

I went back with the first place, as the guy was real helpful, came out and told me I only need to really do two of the tyres, the others two were fine. And even then it was really only on one (I just wanted to do em in pairs). He could get them shipped in by Friday and so I booked em in.a

I had a good "feeling" about the first place also.

All in all, it wasnt an urgent purchase as the Goose is in good shape, but one did need to be replaced in the near future, so I wanted to do them in pairs, and with the amount of driving Im gonna be doing in here, I feel the lady needs her shoes!

Cant wait till Friday!

Nothing wrong with Jax Quickfit Tyres, I have been using them only for tyres since 1992. They have all the brands and can get whatever you want if they don't stock it. And can't fault prices or service.
Very reputable business in Brisbane/Gold Coast. I fitted tyres for them on my days off back in 1994-98 as a casual job when we had babies and one income. Still keep going back.

Yeah there seem to be a few of them around. This particular store that I went into were very helpful and all, just seemed very quiet compared to the first store, and didnt give me as many options is all. Price was competitive which I thought was pretty decent.

Might hit em up for my 2nd set of Pirelli's when the time comes, and compare the two businesses then.

Bob Jane Tmarts are busy because they sell a lot of discount brand tyres(ie "Aussie all rounder" Zetum ,Tri Ace,Al Tenzo, etc), and your top brands too.
Jax don't sell their own brand and some of the behind the counter people are just that, ask to talk to a tyre tech(fitter) and go armed with your list of what you want ,they will source them for you.

Put the two new tires on the front, that is where you have the most braking power applied. The next pair put on the front and move the existing fronts to the rear. With wide tires it is very important to maintain jags recommended tire pressure. that gives you the most solid footprint. over inflate and the center of the tire goes first, under inflate and the shoulders go. Good luck with your selections.

Always have had excellent dependability, ride quality, and wear from Michelin. Other name brand tires are also good. There are not too many 'bad' tires out there these days. Unlike the old days.

Should add. Even though the cost of the Michelin is fairly high, I've found the 'life cycle' cost to be very competitive. So you get good 'bang for the buck'
