20" Tornado Wheel - Anyone changed color?
Hi guys,
Have a set of black 20" Tornado wheels that have light curb rash damage. Im thinking of repainting them. A google and forum search came back with nothing. I need to replace the tires and TPMS anyhow so I figure this might be a good time and idea. Plus paint calipers and put on new pads and find rotors somewhere. Anyone got anything? Im thinking a gunmetal or anthracite on my firesand orange. black wheels with the black pack doesnt look that good to me. |

May not be enough of a difference for you from black, but check out the graphite color Vorsteiner offers on their wheels, I think its an awesome look gives just enough contrast from the tire and other black parts, gotta believe you could find a shop that could powdercoat your wheels to a color such as that.

Bronze will also look good or black and bronze with the firesand. I'd consider color matching the calipers firesand.

Thanks squad! I do love the graphite. Calipers are getting painted firesand.
I thought I'd hate the bronze - I dont. But I dont think it matches as well as a graphite or machined wheel. Looking at that posters current car... looks like he now has a machined wheel. |
My 2017 White British Design Edition Coupe came with the dark gray wheels which I hated. I contacted a local alloy wheel repair company and had them powder coated silver and clear coated. The car looks much better now. There are many of these repair companies all over the USA. I had the work done at their shop where they dismounted the tires and did the proper job rather than the on car spraying. Well worth the $600. I had previously had this same job done on my RS 5 Audi with curb rash and the paint peeling on the inside barrel. The job was better than the factory original because the paint was not so thick.

Has anyone powder coated these? I can't tell if they're true 2 piece wheels that would need to be disassembled.

Pretty sure no OEM F-Type wheel is two piece and any "bolts" or "screws" that are part of the design are purely cosmetic dummies.

I know this is an old thread but I just picked up a set of silver Tornado wheels which I'm having Powdercoated Gloss Black. The silver "rivet" accents are metal screws. They can be removed with a size M8 XZN Triple Square 12 Point Spline Bit. I purchased this set and the M8 size fits perfectly and removes them without damage:

I too was wanting to remove the inserts prior to powder coating the tornado rims. My advice: Don't do it! Purchased the 8mm 12 spline torx and went work. First bolt was removed with out issue. Second, not so well. It stripped on the way out and the end of the threads where covered with the alloy from the rim. They must have applied some type of adhesive to keep the bolts from loosening. Figured I could fix the bolt and hole with a 7mm tap and die and continued on. However, 2 out of 3 bolts stripped on the way out. I repaired the holes as I went along so as not to get ahead of myself. Came to the last set of three bolts on the rim. While removing the bolt it became seized in the hole, could not go back in or out. Put a little more pressure to remove and it snapped the bolt off. After drilling out the hole, which was a challenge being the bolts are stainless and the rims alloy, I JB welded the top piece back in along with all the inserts I removed and quit. Daviper may have had better luck than me but I don't know how I could have done it differently except maybe applying some heat. Looks like I will tape over the inserts prior to powder coating.

Had mine refurbished and they Stripped on stud then heated the wheels up first to remove the others with no issue. Wheels look like new but need to find a replacement stud? Does anybody know where you can buy Rothesay?

Glad I read this - I won't remove the studs- but maybe look for a black cap to cover them, or way to spray them black.

The Dent Wizard in Phoenix bought out my old rim shop and they powder coat the rims any color you want. Drop the car off or take in the rims and they run $650. Not a bad deal considering they fix any rim damage at the same time and included.
