Best color for a used FType
I'm in the market for a used FType and was wondering what the best color would be. Having owned grey cars my whole life I went to look at a 2016 black ftype R yesterday and was dismayed to see the number of swirls and scratches visible on the paint job. Most used cars tend to be lease returns and I guess people just dont give a F running them through the car wash. Is there any hope of finding one that's three years old without these issues? Would a good detailer be able to correct these issues? I am planning on getting ceramic coating on the car I buy but scratches may be hard to hide. So if it ends up not being black, I don't want white as I feel the lines of the F type don't show up as well in white and it's a bit boring...what other colors would be good at masking swirls and such?

This one is 4 years old (MY15), and was paint corrected (professionally polished) and ceramic coated (Gtechniq Crystal Serum Pro) when 1 years old. It is still scratch and swirl free, and has not had any other treatments done last 3 years.
Pics taken this summer during a weekend trip, so not perfectly clean. Colour is IRR (Italien Racing Red). https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...dea85474df.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...131fb442bf.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...9b28ce8b5c.jpg |
...and IRR looks different colours in different lights. I've had silver for my first XF and XKR (shows lines nicely, easy to keep clean, matches my hair) and black for my second XF (unbeatable looks just after it has been washed, but that only lasts minutes) and now have IRR for the F Type and the XE. Absolutely beautiful and a real attention getter, if that is your thing.https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...bb7a56c7fa.jpg

Stratus Grey
F type looks great in many colors, but hard to beat white (with the black pack, please!) for an easy to maintain finish that doesn't show swirls.
If you like the look of black, with somewhat less work, stratus grey is a cool option - it looks black in most situations, but has a lot of grey in it that gives a bit of a chameleon effect and it doesn't seem to hlgh light swirls and imperfections as much as a true black does. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...61ec6a5bb4.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...cbde342118.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...2e329a3724.jpg |

Best Color
The F type looks great in any color. After having many black and silver cars over the past 15 years I decided to go with:

Thanks all

I just got mine, so sorry for being late to the thread.
The car is Dark Sapphire and the color is one of the reasons I choose this one. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...25a3b2db6f.jpg |

Ahhhcually, it's "Midnight Sapphire" and I have one and it's beautiful. That being said, I prefer your name, so I might call it that from now on :icon_wink: |
Love my new Red!!

False. The lines of the F-Type show up amazingly in white.

I agree about the white. A car has to be beautiful to pull it off. F-Type, Huracan, and others. White + an average car = ugly car.
Ugly cars look more attractive in darker colors. Black can hide a lot of design mistakes. |
An F-Type can look good in just about any color depending on the accent colors of the wheels, brake calipers, and/or other elements like whether your trim is chrome or gloss black. It's all about the "package" you put together as opposed to the color itself.
I've always loved white cars, but decided to go with black this time as I think this car looks incredibly aggressive in the darker colors. I also love the dark grey's. As you know, with a black car, be prepared to spend some time polishing once a year, but if you can maintain it via a good wash procedure, it's a stunning look. |

White or black with the red interior were my first choices though the F type looks good in many colors. I'm sure swirls can be removed from the black but yes, it does take more effort to keep it looking good. So far I love my white which looks "as new" Dave |

I love my Fuji white 2018 and am happy I didn't buy the black vert that I was looking at before I settled on this one. I've had two other white cars over the years, one of which I'll attach a rendition of--a rendition because it's really a picture of a sweatshirt I had airbrushed for my son after I gifted him the car. I don't know what happened to the photos of ''74 GP, but the airbrushed rendition is perfect. Any way, it was definitely a looker in its day with white, paint, while vinyl top and white interior. Also, it had well over 200k miles when it was literally put out to pasture...and never had so much as a valve cover removed--great road car except for the the fact it got 15 MPG at best. |
As mentioned above white needs a lot of accent colors to make it look great. Once you add those "colors" I believe it detracts from the true lines of the car. I've had a few white trucks but never a white car.

I agree white is the easiest and lowest maintenance color. Grey or silver probably second.
However, my vote is for British racing green with chrome trim and chrome propeller wheels.for best looking lines when clean. |
Last August I voted white as the best color for an F-Type and posted a picture of my 2014 "S" convertible. In September I bought a 2016 F-Type R, and guess what color I got.

I like your red seats.

Any used car will have swirls if not taken cared of. But that can be taken out with a paint correction. I have to say the black paint is beautiful when it's taken cared of. The pearl jag uses looks amazing.

Still debating this in my head 😏 |

In my opinion, this is one of the best color combos for our car. If I hadn't found my firesand, I would have gotten a white one with the red seats.

I've been partial to silver cars over the years but decided to go with a splash of color- I liked bluefure blue, but my A8L is about that color
|
Color is a personal matter and really has nothing to do with the paint condition which is totally up to the previous owner(s).
One thing you might take into account though is the color combination. Personally, I think my BRG/camel brown is the perfect combo - you may well disagree. I did look at cars with red interiors which other forum members indicated did wear well, but personally I would never go for the off-white interiors that seem to come with paint colors like blue. Also not a big fan of all-black interiors - very ordinary for such a beautiful car, though likely the best color for long term appearance. |
I assumed the question stemmed from a question of value rather than aesthetics. Two issues to consider: resaleability and resistance to the elements.
1. I never consider selling and car I purchase. In all instances, I have either donated them to a charity at the end of their lifespans, or have restored and kept them. The average age of my fleet of 4 vehicles is 29 years, so I can't really wax poetic on resale value. 2. The other key consideration on color is how well it holds up under the elements. Generally, reds and light blues hold up poorly, but that really depends on the paint manufacturer. Has anyone on this forum experienced paint fading on their F-Types yet.? |
My wife's light (sapphire) blue 1979 Fiat still looked great when we sold it in 2016.
The exterior held up much better than the interior light brown leather/plastic trim. I just could not deal with the unreliability - suposedly that was the last year they used carbs before going injection, and Fiat just could not manage all the emissions crap. |

I went with British Racing Green took some time to find the right one |
Definitely a Jaguar classic color!!
Camel interior? Enjoy. |
