Why did I buy an F-Type...

I put this first in the picture thread, but it obviously does not belong there..

So what did I drive before I bought the F-Type... ... there is no logic it seems to me, the only recurring aspect is english cars..

LISTING OF MY ICE LIFE

Who can list the largest number of cars he ever owned himself [ so not the trucks of your dad's trucking company..].

For many years I wanted to brainstorm which cars I had, before I forgot... .. maybe its better to forget now I wrote it out.. https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/i...s/icon_doh.gif

The bold printed cars I bought new, the rest were new to me..

Present :
30- F-Type Coupe Jaguar MY2019 P300 autobox;
29- MiTo Centenario Alfa Romeo MY2010 135HP manual ;
28- Discovery 3 HSE Landrover 2006 TdV6 autobox ;

[ 20,24-26 and 29 were actualy shopping trolleys and for the kids].

Past [ some cars overlapping periods owned, last car on top ];
27- LR2 Freelander Landrover 2010 2.2TD manual;
26- Fiesta Futura 16V Ford 2008 120HP manual;
25- Smart Coupe Mercedes 2004 69HP autobox;
24- 420SI Sedan Rover 1999 136HP manual;
23- X-trail Columbia Nissan 2008 135HP manual;
22- Patrol Nissan 2004 autobox;
21- Patrol Nissan 2000 autobox;
20- Micra Nissan 2005 manual;
19- Terrano II Nissan 1997 manual;
18- Tino Nissan 2002 manual;
17- Primera Nissan 2000 manual;
16- Primera Nissan 1998 autobox;
15- Primera Nissan 1996 manual;
14- MG-F MG 1997 manual;
13- XJ6 2,8 Jaguar 1987 autobox;
12- 940GL Station Volvo 1986 autobox;
11- 480 Coupe Volvo 1987 manual ;
10- 940 GL Sedan Volvo 1986 autobox;
09- Sorpio 2L Ford 1985 manual ;
08- 5 GT-Turbo Renault 1987 manual;
07- Metro 1L Mini BL 1982 manual;
06- 304 Peugeot 1977 manual;
05- Taunus Ford 1978 manual
04- 20TL Renault 1978 manual;
03- Lancer 1.4L Mitsubishi 1973 manual;
02- Princess 2200HLS BL 1977 autobox;
01- Dolomite Sprint Triumph 1977 manual; My first car, when I was 17.. ..took it apart and rebuild it, 3 years old.

Those were the times of Britisch Leyland and the unions..

..oh yeah... a motobecane mobilette when I was 16 and a Zündapp CS50 after that..
Then in 1986 I briefly owned a HONDA Trial bike, but I never got round to getting a license..

That concludes my ICE legacy..

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/i...icon_bump1.gif

I only owned one german car... .. for many reasons.. https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/i...on_badrazz.gif .

I never spend 80% of the purchase price on any car in two years for REPAIRS .. ..except for the Smart.
Mercedes NEVER again..

.not an F-Type, but another English two-seater an 'F' in its name.. MG-F

RIRR 06-19-2018 07:14 AM

That is quite an automotive history. After owning so many Nissans, did you cross-shop a GT-R against the F-type?

Dan_NL 06-19-2018 07:39 AM

@RIRR.
The nissan saga was due to my wife working with Nissan Motor Parts Center in the port of Amsterdam.. .. they sold ex-managers cars at bool value to
employees that did not got complementary cars to begin with.. This meant we drove very cheap as we could buy a 3 yrs old car for 40% of the value
and sell at the same price 3 years on. But after a while [ Terrano II was last prize..] the tax inspector got wind of it and then it all stopped...
I did get the Tino at a reduced price but the car was not able to cope with my 2m height and 98kgs then. I fell of the chair in almost every corner..

The Patrols were therefore used, bit too long a story about how & why. But we ditched the Terrano then as we got the first Patrol, traded the
Terrano in on a new Micra for the shopping ...

But the seats in Nissans are no match to my fysique , and getting a bit older it kills my back and I start slipping discs in the lumbar zone..

So I don't look at nissan at all anymore. My wife left the company in 2007, also one of the reasons I guess.

My best ever car is a Discvery 3 [LR3] , we will most probably never sell it. We had such good times on holidays, it took us every year
2500km's to the Algarve [ europe's California..] and back, hassle free. We had 7 persons [ some friends of our children would com along],
all luggage and do 135kmh steady on the highways averaging 9,5 km to the liter [ 22.35 MPG US ]. Its a 2.7L V6 diesel engine.

Hi dave,

Quite a number of cars. Are they in the correct order [ bottom most recent ?] , since suddenly two 70-ties cars jump up..
But you did change from US to european cars. Is this the same with your bikes ?

Yep, they are in order; the last one, the '70 'Bee was purchased about 12 years ago and I did a full restoration on it myself; took me 10 years and more money than I care to admit. Sold it for enough to buy the Jag though.

As far as motorcycles go, I've owned Hondas, Kawasaki's, Suzukis, Yamahas, Betas, Gas-Gas's, KTM's and even one Harley

Cheers,
Dave

Dan_NL 06-19-2018 03:04 PM

Its good to know that I am NOT alone with changing cars this often !

I had the full restauration on my first car, the Triumph Dolomite Sprint. Car was only 3 years old, but a rust bucket. Turned out to have been standing stationary between degreasing and priming due to a strike !
I did not have the skills, so I learned a lot. Quite a moment to start the engine [ needed only to replace some seals luckily, no overhaul there..] and drive away with my driving license on the day I got it in the mail...

Sadly joy only lasted 6 months. Then a truck crossed my lane and I could not steer away due to oncoming traffic and cycling kids on both sides of the road. The car was a write off , only managed to slow down
from 80 tto 60kmph as I only had seconds. The guy pulled out a preselection lane and crossed. Was an Iranian guy with no valid license. Long story. In the end I got my money and never bothered to do major
works on any car since. :icon_crackup:

1987 Toyota Camry
2002 Acura CL Type-S
2003 Audi A6 3.0

2008 Lexus GS350
2012 Jaguar Jaguar XJ-Supercharged 5.0
2010 Lexus LS460L
2015 Lexus RC-F 5.0
2014 BMW 650i Gran Coupe

Current:

2016 Jaguar F-Type R convertible
2011 Jaguar XJL-Supercharged 5.0
2017 Acura MDX Advance

I just realized that even though I’ve driven manual, I’ve never actually owned one. I guess I’m just not a big fan of driving stick in LA traffic.

Dan_NL 06-19-2018 04:41 PM

@sgvkirbster.
The camry.. one car I regret never owning... We rented one in Curação in 1997 [ a newer model ], and I was totally impressed. It was incredibly quiet and smooth to drive !
You give a steady choice of sedans and some coupe's , not the range of rust buckets and pre-stage breaker-yard type of cars I started out with, as a student..

I remember I only did minor mods later, my love for wooden dashes keeps persuing me.. I made a wooden dashboard from a laminated panel, cut a hole for a glovecompartment
and kitted it out with the hardware that I got from a Jaguar on a junkyard... :icon_pirate: I think it was the first Englis car worldwide with a digital clock [ centre ].
Only on the left door I fitted the wood under the window , the other side still had to be done... Early '80-ties DIY custom job... ;)

well if the OP doesn’t respond, I can. I bought a brand new GT-R in 2013. One of very best cars I ever owned or driven. I took it to an Extreme Experience driving show in 2015 and it was one of the favorites of all the instructors...these guys had 488 Ferrari’s, Lambos and R8’s to drive and they favored the GT-R. I sold it because the maintenance costs (not repair costs) were obscene. You’re in the same price point as the F type R, but with the Jag’s warranty and maintenance program, the F type R wins....and the Jag is prettier. But the GT-R is a very close second, very close.

But hey tzoid9 ; its OK if you want to express your opinion on a GTR, I never driven one so I can not confirm nor counter your facts.

I needed a bigger car then the X-Trail. The Pathfinder is for midgets ; backrests stop under my shoulderblades... And if I was driving,
only a person without leggs could sit behind me.

Also we stopped buying Nissan due to the cost of parts. Once the electric engine of the screenwasher of the X-Trail failed , we had to
buy a complete new tank/pump assembly for [ from the top of my mind.. ] € 265,- . Some year later the washer tank of my LR3 needed
replacing and I think that was something like € 45,- ...

On top of that, the cars became bland [ exept for the GTR and the ZR maybe ], more 'one-size-fits-all' , like ford did later with global models.
And I was shocked when the lower hinge [cast iron..] from the front suspension [Patrol] was broken once ; I didn't even go offroad with it !

So , no more Nissan in any shape or form for me.

The F-type R (supercharged V8) is definitely faster than the M4 in the first 2 gears, mostly due to traction. Third is pretty close, and then the F-type has better top end. The main downside with the M4 is traction and stability. It can be very unpredictable. But it is lighter and a bit more agile, and has better tech.

It’s hard to compare with the GT-R because it’s not stock and hasn’t been for a long time. It’s a maniac and is definitely faster.

The GT-R is a car that I have always respected because of its capabilities, but the exterior styling and the interior don't excite me. It seems that a complete redesign is overdue, so it will be interesting to see what Nissan come up with (assuming they don't just let it wither on the vine like the 370Z).

I don't even want to list the only three cars I have owned to date. It's very embarrassing :icon_bricks:

Nonsense! May I suggest NEVER measuring yourself against anyone and certainly not about their possessions? Past, present, and future! Based on what little I know about you I would rather spend time with you rather than with a “jerk” (to put it mildly) who has owned countless cars.

Success should never ever be measured in $’s!

Humble as always you are Sir. :) Cars are the biggest passion for almost everyone on the forum, and seeing people do what they love really makes me happy. I seek inspiration regarding information, humility, kindness and all of the positives that are here on this forum and the people I have met in real life. If I grow up to be even remotely as cool as you guys are, I would consider myself successful. I hope and will always try to never become a "jerk" irrespective of what stage I am in my life. And in the end I would want to complete my life long dream of owning a V12. Someday .....

Well said Death1ord!...And I hope this thread doesn't come across like folks are bragging about what they've owned by any means. Certainly not my intention, besides, many of my cars weren't worth bragging about. :)
As you shared, cars/bikes are a passion for many of us, fun to see what people have owned thru life to enjoy that passion.

Why not ? Its not to show off.. .. its just that I wondered if there is a 'common denominator' in people who own an F-Type. The more data the better the result.
If you would NOT share your cars, it would distort the item. Then it would look its only petrol heads or old geezers who own an F-Type...

If anybody had asked once to me ".. why does a 18 year old student drive a 6 cylinder executive car.. " when I had the Austin Princess 2200HLE automatic
[ VERY posh car in the Netherlands in 1980..] , I would not have been to shy to tell them that it was because it was the only car with decent seats in it..
Story goes that when they started building the Concorde they ordered thousands of seats. But only a handfull of planes were ever build... The seats
ended up in the Austin Princess.. .. and the name was a wink to the use of the 'royal class seats'.. :D

Even so, that when my dad confiscated the car as he preferred it over his Mitsubisho Lancer, I bought a xx-th hand ford taunus and bought two Princess
seats at a scrapyard and put them in the Taunus..

Those were the days : just unscrew and replace and it fitted.. :icon_toast:

Oh yeah, just thought of this. Did you ever see the old BBC Top Gear series ? They had celebs as guests to drive a '..reasonably priced car..' ,
these people often only had a few cars in their lives and started out with the utter most basic means of transport.. ..so don't worry : you'd be in famous company.. ;)

That thing is gorgeous. I love timeless designs. You can pretty much see it after 50 years and still be like damn ... that thing is stunning. I think Bugatti and Pagani are the two manufacturers that still focus on timeless designs. You won't see a lot of digital gauges and huge fancy screens in there.

Below is a pic of a Pagani Zonda I took. Just look at the materials used. Carbon Fiber, Wood, Aluminium, Leather. Everything looks so amazing, it all just works beautifully together. I think this is one of the best interiors I have seen on a car. It was breathtaking.

@death1ord.
Sonata , very sensible low budget mobilty / BMW 535xi , not much wrong with that.. / 2017 Jaguar F-Type SVR ; wish I could afford one [ € 205.000 here due to CO2 taxes..].

What I find really funny is that we have CLASHING taste for the looks of cars.. .. the pictured pagani interior is fro me an example of complete lack of taste or the vaguest idea where they wanted to go design wise.. :icon_starwars:

battle of tastes... :icon_toast:

Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder :) Differences in taste and opinions is actually healthy. Makes the world less boring and provides good amounts of variations based on permutations and combinations. When it comes to design, nothing is right or wrong. Its whatever works for you.

Dang, I have always operated under the assumption that the one who died with the most (and costliest) toys was the winner.
