Would you buy a 2015 for the Rear Wheel Drive or AWD
 

In the market for an F Type R. I want to buy new but is it a trade off with the AWD. Basically is it more fun to drive the 2015 Rear Wheel drive? Thanks

Buy what you prefer. Everyone is going to tell you what they think is the right answer... but there isn't one. Do you prefer the "drama" of an extremely tail happy car, or do you prefer all out grip and being thrown in your seat? Those are really the two options here. Both cars get sideways, both cars drive pretty much the same. It's just what you want. Don't let anyone else convince you otherwise.

I've got '14 V8S so RWD. It's only tail happy when I want it to be. RWD are fast, hooligan cars. AWD are fast cars.

But Stohlen is right. Drive both and pick the one you like. You won't be disappointed with either.

+1. Buy what excites you the most and will keep your attention. Nothing else matters.

+1 on both counts.

I would say the highlighted items lean more toward the RWD, but either is simply a blast.

If you are planning on driving it as a daily driver in not-so-great conditions I would lean toward AWD.

If you try the RWD drive with the Pirellis, you will want the AWD. I was planning to go to an AWD from my RWD, and since I've put on the Michelins, I have no desire to switch. The rear wheel drive with the Michelins 4S is a completely different car.

Awww and all the RWD guys were doing so good at not putting the AWD down!

In my V6S, I prefer RWD. In a R, I'd still be OK with RWD if I lived in the south, but would go for AWD farther north. Being a former Darnestown resident, I'd lean AWD if it's going to be a daily driver.

My first thought on any AWD is more moving parts to go wrong, but I never really made any mental decision one way or the other. Guess I'd have to drive them as well.

Slightly OT: There's no harm in putting Michelins just on the back when I get done destroying the Pirellis, right? I'd change the front to Michelin when they're worn out.

I get a kick out of 15 posts (out of how many members on this board?) and the underlying assumption is that RWD is better than AWD - with the friendly twist on, “get what you prefer.” And, as is always, the F-type S’ers chime in heavily over everyone else - Ask yourself why yo think this is. :icon_really:

And, who the hell cares about “more moving parts” or “having more parts that could go wrong?” - it’s a non-issue with a 6 year 100k warranty, is it not?!?

Hell YES it is - as if an F-Type S owner could tell you otherwise or why Jaguar would develop and offer AWD only on the F-type R. :rolleyes:

Ugh. Sigh. And so its begins. Again....

How about AWD owners with their underlying assumption AWD is somehow better on a sports car. Keep in mind this is a system that:

1) Was primarily developed for the litigious USA market since apparently drivers are lacking in skill and only understand binary throttle inputs. RWD R's still available elsewhere.
2) Weighs 180lbs more on a car that is already too heavy
3) Lifts the engine (and importantly all that weight) 1.5 inches higher,
4) Has a higher hoodline/bulge, which is a visibility distraction from inside, almost ruins the look from the outside, and reduces trackability since no one can see the front corners of the car
5) subjectively diminishes fun and driver skill requirements for driving said sports car.
6) more moving parts to break
7) apparant torque limiting off line to protect said 4 wheel drive system.

"Hell yes" AWD is better? Really?

Well it was inevitable that this happened...


1) You're making this assumption, not based in facts. You literally just called out AWD owners for their assumptions...
2) A good point but the AWD is faster in acceleration and most road courses.
3) Totally true but minimal overall impact.
4) True to some extent but you're really stretching here.
5) RWD is also subjectively less fun in some peoples eyes.

7) RWD is torque limited in the exact same way. This is about the trans, not the AWD system.

We get it... you like RWD. No need to justify it by nit picking.

Drive them both, I did. I just found the RWD to be more enjoyable for my style of driving. I think Stohlen summarized fairly succinctly with this first post.
