Just Got an '86 XJ 6: Interior ?s
 

Hi, on the car I just got, the wood is spotless, but it appears to have no finish on it; it looks and feels like unfinished wood. perfect, but not shiny like I expected from my Rolls-Royce experience. is this right/normal?
Also, the headliner appears to be sagging over the back seat, behind the sunroof. Is this a difficult fix?

Wood should be very high gloss.

Many DIYers replace their headliners. Tricky ...and a bit scary... folding the backing board for removal :-). The sunroof panel is tricky as well but it's been so long I can't remember the details. Still, though, many DIYers are successful at this.

Material readily available on-line or from your local auto trim shop.

After the board is out of the car it's a material of peeling off the old material, brushing the board clean, and very carefully applying new material with spray adhesive.

Apparently the finish is completely gone, but it's amazing how even and undamaged it is otherwise.
How difficult is it to remove the dash wood for refinish?

You've got one of the [what I call] straight-grain dashboards seen mostly on 1985 cars. Typially the Ser IIIs have wood with more of a "burl" appearance.

It almost looks as though the dash has been refinished to "matte" versus gloss. The center a/c vent looks like it's had a bit of custom woodwork as well.

Anyhow, removing the dash is perfectly DIYable. Plan on about 8 hours for removal and reinstallation.

When you're ready give a shout and give you a step-by-step. Or at least touch the key points. It's been a few years since I've done one
