FYI, I found a great place, Michigan Metal Works that specializes in making custom control arms. I am having them make a new set of custom lower control arms to give as much increased turning radius as possible. I just sent over a set from a wrecking yard so that way I can still drive my Jag. I am getting my repaired glove box that I accidently scratched this Friday and hope to have time to finally post completed shots and maybe a youtube clip too
Clyde, I made the rotisserie - lots of good plans on the web and easy to do if you have a metal chop saw and MIG. I used 5" casters which work fine on smooth concrete - suggest 6" or bigger if floor is rough and you'll be moving it around a lot. I just ordered a single Dayton wire to check fit and clearance (too expensive to make a mistake) - ended up with 17x8 - will let you know how they work. I've used 16x6 in the past on a Mark 2 - just make sure to increase the backspacing by an inch - if the additional width is toward the outside of the wheel you'll have fender clearance issues on compression at the front.
Doug,
Thanks, fantastic build, by the way
going on overload since I got the Mk2 home. Questions:
What brand of rotisserie are you using? Would you buy it again. My garage floor is ROUGH. Would the casters work OK on a rough floor?
Have you settled in on a tire size/wheel size? Thought I wanted Minilites - found bad rap on a blog. Also looking at wires. Would like a 16x6 Dont' know if there is such an animal. Have not even looked at clearances yet. Need to finish my 77
Regards,
Clyde
Primaz, I'm using the stock splined hubs. That would explain a different offet and backspacing than yours, but I've got the tire just sticking out from the wheelarch bead so I know I can't go out with the wheel any further - in this position I'm losing a good inch of steering travel just before lock. I'll probably play it safe and go with 8" vs the 8 1/2" wheels.
Does the S Type have a sway bar in that IRS? Sounds like you might have another thing to add to the list! Regards, Doug.
Did use change the front wheel bolts and hub? I believe we had to change the hub and use longer bolts with a 1/2 spacer for the front. I changed my car from knock offs to 5 lug on all 4 corners which turns out to be a Chevy standard bolt pattern...
Yes those are QA1 coil overs. I know we will have to change the rear springs to something stiffer with all of my crazy mobile office, the extra batteries, and larger fuel tank but this set up has so many options on springs, etc.; we won't know until do a shake down. I just hope it handles half way decent with all of my crazy trunk setup?
