Hi. I am replacing the dampers on my rear suspension, Jaguar3.8S. I got GAZ C20606GAZ/1 dampers for the job. The old one's have a cover on the shaft side on the other side there is a packing ring, seat and 2 retainers. It seems as if the new dampers have a retainer that slots in to seat the damper in the spring. Does this replace the packing ring, seat and 2 retainers? I am not sure but will include photo's to hopefully explain it better.
That does look like an updated version. Looking at the lower end, it may have been necessary in order to allow for the screw adjustment and the top may just be for safety sake. New spring seat instead of possibly rusted or weak original?
I have inserted the new dampers in the spring and used the dust cover fom the previous one's as well. The total length is about 15 mm longer. Is this ok? I assume I will attach them to the rear frame under slightly more tension.
It might mean the ride height at the back is 15mm higher than it used to be with the old shocks. This might be that the old shocks are worn and the new ride height will be correct. In my opinion the rear ride height should be so all the wire wheel can be seen but the side wall of the tyre is hidden under the wheel arch. If it is set too low then you will have great difficulty removing the rear wheels and tyres from the car especially wire wheels.
Thanks Cass, I had read the post this morning and wanted to reply but couldn't put into words the simple thought of "that's what it should be"
Coffee, right?
