there is no such thing as a coombs spat,
coombs just braised in a 3/4 copper pipe for the rear arch |

If it's any consolation I don't think there's an easy fix. The after market Coombs spats are stupid expensive and the mounting hardware interferes with tire clearance - not certain I understand the reason for altering the radius - assume you wanted a tighter look at the rear?
I notice you plated over the spat mounting surface which is inside the shut face of the door but outside the weather seal. I know I don't have to say but make sure you've got this welded up tight so no water can intrude. That is some consolation re Spats thank you. Re the plates, I was undecided on how to approach this, I think I asked on here, but didn't get a reply, so I went with plating them over, at the moment I have spot welded them so they are not yet watertight, I was thinking of seam sealer rather than welding the edge to give them a crisper edge, but you have now got me thinking, I could go with epoxy aluminium filler which is totally watertight or weld them and dress it well. I will probably now go with fully welding them. Everything was coated with weld thru primer before welding in, I was then going to take the same approach re the inside edge where it meets the tub and weld it up and seam seal. I am also looking at coating the underside with an epoxy mastic like POR 15, and then possibly coating with uPOL Raptor which is a urethane coating used as a truck bed liner, flexible, hard as nails and also provides some sound deadening, and is fully watertight, but the jury is still out on that one. |

Doug,
I was holding my breath waiting for you to read this thread. Alan must have slipped up in a PM to TilleyJon. |

Doug,
I was holding my breath waiting for you to read this thread. Alan must have slipped up in a PM to TilleyJon. He kindly emailed me with some really helpful advice on Audio setup for this car as I was trying to make sure I got the setup correct before I went too far with speakers etc. I hope I haven't upset him if this was a closely guarded secret ! PS Clyde you can call me Jon instead of TilleyJon I won't mind. |
Thanks Jon! I'll tip my Tilley to you!
Alan Primaz is quite the wealth of information. |

Got a chance to finish the arches and get a coat of primer on, fully welded the closing pieces by the door shut as recommended by Doug (Thank you Doug) so I'm happy that no water will get in there.
The epoxy primer mastic is really thick stuff shooting it through a 2.0 needle setup but without over reducing it there is quite a bit of orange peel, so it needs to be flatted back between coats, but film thickness is good so there is no issue there. The body will get at least 4 - 5 coats of epoxy primer for a really good base, left for several days between coats and flatted back each time, should then have a dry film of approx 0.5mm of epoxy primer as a base, which will be left until I'm ready to prep for finished painting |
hi Jon !

I'm getting the car off the rotisserie tonight and onto a floor dolly so I can wheel her out of the workshop into another spot so I can start the front and rear axle rebuilds, I will post some pics when she's in the other spot as there is more room to take pics.

Pulled the old girl out of the workshop tonight and go her into another area, this isn't a work area so just need to make some space in the workshop to do the axles and some other bits.
I'm pretty pleased with the progress, it's good to see her out of the workshop for the first time in a year ! My workshop isn't big, I would say I can't swing a cat around in there with the car in it, but technically her the car on the rotisserie I actually could ! Will start on the axles tomorrow evening now. |
Thanks for sharing the pictures. That is really great progress!

john, are you going to fit a rear valance to the car.

I can only use the other space to put the body in for a few weeks as it is not being used at present, so I am using that time to get the axles done, I will then get the body back in the workshop and finish spraying the underside and fit the valance ready for the axles to go back in so I can get her rolling. |
JonTilly, you're make fast work of this project. Looks great. you'll be done before Doug goes for a final road test, and I get my motor built!
|
Thanks Clyde, it doesn't feel that fast sometimes, I figure I have another year ahead of me, hopefully Doug will be out on the road by then and you will have your motor in.

Started dismantling the front axle and got some initial blasting done over that last few days, I have been too busy to get much time.
I think the front mounts were pretty shot !! I will disassemble completely now I have got the worst off and finish blasting the parts and get them back into paint. Here are a few pics before and after blasting. |
