Brake Disc & Pad Options - Brembo STR & X350
 

I would share the list of manufacturers/vendors that I came up with during my search for replacement pads & rotors for my Brembo equipped XJR.

As you know, there isn't much to choose from when it comes to discs/pads for the Brembo cars...

Front Discs/Rotors, 365x32mm

OEM from Jaguar, plain discs only.
Mintex, plain discs only (OEM supplier?) MDC2207
EBC, plain discs, or Ultimax Sport Slotted
Pagid, 55231PRO (also branded Hella Pagid)
R1 Concepts, Premium or E-Line, plain, drilled, slotted or drilled & slotted.
Brakeperformance, plain, drilled, slotted, drilled & slotted, or drilled & dimpled.
Centric/StopTech, plain discs only

Centric make the plain disc, and supply it to Brakeperformance who do the slotting/drilling/dimples and sell them on. Not sure if R1 get thier blanks from Centric as well, probably do.

The key is the "type number" of the front rotor 20018

Apparently the front caliper is unique to Jaguar, hence the rather limited selection of pads available. There are a few big names missing from this list; Hawk, and even Brembo themselves LOL!

Apparently the rear caliper is shared with various Ferrari's, Lotus', Volvo's and the Brembo A, C, or F Caliper Family Gran Turismo Kit, hence the greater selection of pads available. No rear pads from Pagid.

Brilliant. You might add that front discs are vented, rears solid. Also, the EPB pad details.

Oh, and min-max pad thicknesses: front 2-10.3mm, rear 2-8.9mm, EPB 1-5.5mm
are what I have in my notes.

That is about all I have seen as well. I am running Redstuff in the front and Akebono in the rear. I also suggest to people if you haven't changed your brake fluid in the past two years, then do it. You will be surprised how much better the brakes are after a fluid change.

While we are talking all things Brembo, might be worth adding the info for the rebuild kits too.

The rear EB pads are hard to find anywhere except Jaguar.

I finally found them at one place aftermarket. Beck-Arnley - #0899001. Says made by TRW on them.
Also Wagner #MX971

Also the Akebono part numbers for the ceramic pads. Cars thru VIN N52047

Rear - #EUR592

Check Rock Auto for them. Good prices!

Although I suspect steel equivalents are not readily available, and you'll have to machine your own,

As for 2-piece rotors, those would be a slick upgrade for the STR,

The STR's suspension is pretty sophisticated and mostly aluminum components, that rotor/hat would be great for additional weight savings on unsprung mass,

I run 2-piece rotors and 6-piston wilwood calipers on my other car and carbotech pads, but that is a track-car application,

i have driven my STR aggressively on the street with the current brakeperformance rotors and EBC red pads, and I'm pretty happy with how they perform in a non-racing environment,
but they're still 'limited' and I'm always mindful of the fact I am slowing 4000lbs of car repeatedly here; on a track I don't doubt this current setup would be overwhelmed within a few laps,

rock-auto sells rebuilt front and rear brembo calipers for STR applications,
these are rebuilt by centric, and are well priced assuming you send your originals back for the core deposit, come loaded with pads and all the hardware,

I would also warn against bleeding in some cases, the aluminum bodied brembo calipers have two steel bleeders per caliper; the aluminum threads can occasionally be damaged when interacting with the bleeder, just be delicate and aware of this before jumping into the bleeding procedure,
I see many every-day cars that are still on their factory brake fluid 4-8 years down and the road and operate within spec, not always worth the hassle for the every-man in some cases... one of the golden rules of wrenching on cars is 'if it aint broke, dont fix it' , can keep you out of trouble...

Another source for rotors to add to the list?

Frozen Rotors, being sold by Eurotoys, choice of plain or slotted.

I checked out the Froezen Rotors website, and they do list rotors for the STR 2003-2005, same as Eurotoys shows. No dimensions given but they state:

2005 - 2005 Jaguar Super V8 Supercharged 4.2L V8 Models
2003 - 2003 Jaguar Vanden Plas Supercharged Models w/ Brembo Brakes

So it would seem that they did their homework on the rotors.

They also lists pads, with some glaring mistakes. They say that Hawk HB194F.570 fit the front of the STR, that's just plain wrong, they are for the rears. Also show "race" pads from Performance Friction, 0592.01.15.44, for the fronts, which is again wrong, actually for the rears...

Quick search on the forum & they are only mentioned twice, nobody has ever fitted them.

I'm reluctant to add these guys to the list, as they don't seem to know what they are on about, for the pads at least...anybody got feedback on Frozen Discs?

The other one I came across is DISCITALIA, which are distributed by brakeworld.com

They list both slotted, and drilled/slotted rotors specifically for the STR 2003-2005. But these things aren't cheap $1000 for a set of four.

Same again, anyone got feedbck on DISCITALIA?

Brakeworld also offer a "Brembo" drilled/slotted rear disc for the STR, as well as OEM plain discs (which I assume to be either OEM or Centric).

Shall we add these three to the list for rotors?

I have also noticed Amazon has the wrong part numbers for front and rears. Double check part numbers before you order!!!

I have tried to paste a link above (hope it works) from a member a few years ago who has installed 2 piece rotors. Scroll down the thread for photos.

I also remember a better thread with more photos and explanation of the whole rotor making process but I can't find it..

Another good thread! If someone proceeds with getting 2-piece rotors made for their car, I am sure that the topic of floating or fixed 2-piece rotors will arise.
My understanding has been that you want "floating rotors" if you get "pad knock back". But due to the expense of a new set of 2-piece rotors, people often go ahead and purchase floating just in case.

My favorite rotor brand is Coleman Racing. (Best rotor prices too!) They can and will build just about any rotor you want. My last purchase was a pair of 365 x 28 rear rotors for my sub frame build. (I think I posted images somewhere...) I like Wilwood hats if you can match one up. There are also several places that will custom machine hats, you just have to pay the price.

I got prices from AP Racing (via Spires in the UK) and Alcon (via their Australian distributor) for 2-piece floating front rotors...

At this point in time you could buy 8 pairs of R1 fronts for the price of AP or Alcon 2-piece ones...

Hi everyone, I am sick of my rotors, I waited 12 weeks to get the EBC black dash for my XJR X350, and after a smooth break in period, of driving slowly on UK roads, I went to Germany. And guess what? The rotors are shaking when I apply the brake after 70mph. I need other rotors, and I found a company which cryogenically treat the rotors. They offered me discs with these dimensions, however, they are slightly different in thickness as I can see from the images in this thread. Does anyone know if they would work anyway?

Cambo thanks for the link and reply. Do they hold to really hard braking? Did you try to abuse them?

Have you renewed your suspension? It's all going to be worn by now...

I did a trackday on the R1 Premium Slotted rotors (no drilling) and EBC Yellowstuff pads.

Got them so hot the pads were smoking and the black coating on the rotors burnt away.

Not a shake, shimmy or wobble.

I warped two sets of OEM Jag rotors prior to that. So I know the shaking you talk about. This just has not happened with the R1 rotors.

Everything is new, bushes, steering rods, and the upper arms. I am taking it in to get two new air shocks, as the left one is leaking air. So yeah, it is all new. Thinking maybe to put some power flex bushes.

Ok I am sold :) But you have the S type right? Is it lighter than the XJR X350? I will try to get the R1, but on their website, they do not seem to ship to UK :(
