This code is very common. Do a search in this forum with the code and you'll see all sorts of good troubleshooting info.

Most likely problem will be a faulty gas cap.

Is it possible that the code is actually p0442?

Hey Rick happy new year!
Ok I hope its that simple I'm gonna call the dealer and try and get one I cleared the code twice and it came back within a day.
My wifes Eclipse did this once and it was the gas cap but I do not remember if it was the same code.

The search will not come up with anything if I just pop in P0422 and I have tried different combos with words and just "codes/codes"

Yea it is possible I had my teenage daughter in the pass seat and I called out the code for her to write it down so yes it is possible she was texting on her iphone the whole time I had her sitting there. Makes sense P0422 is different than what the scan tool told me so yea P0442 is most likely correct.

No worries. And it probably IS the gas cap. "Small" can mean "very very small"...

The reason I asked is because S Type had some changes with gas tanks and canister clove valves and things. 07 S Type has whats called a DTML pump (diagnostic monitoring of tank leakage) pump and a COV (change-over valve) into one module).
P0442Leak detected. 40 thou.

• Hoses and connections.
• Fuel tank filler cap.
• Carbon canister.
• Canister close valve.

A fuel filler cap can cause a p0442 but it would most likely cause a p0455 gross leak (large leak). The dealership would perform a DTML test with SDD but I would first check gas cap and if tight then check both left and right fuel tank ports. To do this, removed back seat by sliding little black tabs to the drivers side of the car. 2 black tabs located front of the back seat under leather. slide tabs and lift up. Then lift up insulation with seat removed and you will see 2 black round covers, removed covers. Then you will see fuel tank ports. Look for signs of fuel leakage. Or you can erase codes and see if they come back. If you have anymore questions then post reply. Have a good day and God bless.

I replaced my aftermarket gas cap 3k miles ago with a Jag OEM part and so far it has corrected my P0442 code issue.

The "joy" of the more recent car being increased sophistication & detection of a tiny leak. Oh :(

Ok guys here is an UPDATE
Went to the Jag Dealer and bought a new fuel cap ($24.00) and no code for 2 days!
They look identical although the seal on the original was not as tight as the new one but so far so good.
