str with no warranty
Are str reliable enough to buy one without awarranty(50-60k miles)? I need a reliable car, I don't mind doing maintence or minor repairs. I still have a few years left of school andso far all the ones I've found in my price range (15-18k) don't have a warranty.
I hate to be the one to tell you not to get the warranty because nothing drops faster than a stock after I just bought it - haha, If the warrantly is around $2k you should be ok, and have piece of mind. Browse some of the threads you might see what type of things can go wrong. Welcome to the forum!
yeah without a warranty is silly, ill sell you mine in spring for $20k with 100k mile jaguar warranty. Plus some of them with little miles can be vary unreliable bc they werent serviced right/driven right and some with high miles can be very reliable because they were well taken care of.
I've had my STR for a year and I would be really pissed at myself if I didn't get a warranty with this car. Unless you have a few thousand bucks set aside for unexpected repairs, get an aftermarket warranty. On a Jaguar, it is almost a guarantee that it will pay for itself.
Since your potential purchase is outside factory warranty you will not be able to find a bumper to bumper warranty worth its salt. That said, I would not buy unless the car's price were significantly discounted. I've had 2 STR's, the 2003 had so many problems that when it got out of factory warranty I sold for a used, select edition, 2005.
I agree with others' comments - I wouldn't own one without warranty unless I had driven it for at least one year to have a 'sense' of how reliable the car is or isn't.
If I were in your shoes, I would:
1> look for an STR just inside factory warranty - so you could buy an aftermarket bumper to bumper,
2> wait for a private party car that has a select edition warranty that can be transferred, or
3> buy a select edition from a Jag dealer.
On point 1 above, a bumper to bumper (exclusionary) policy that gives you an extra 4 years or until 100K, $0 deductible, will run you around $3,000 for an STR. For me, that would be an acceptable price against the future risks of paying for Jag repairs.
Just remember, Jags depreciate like a rock but the dealer oriented services/costs are geared towards someone who is comfortable paying $60K+ for a new car. If you're good with this - great. If not, buy the warranty OR make sure you have an independent mechanic who charges a reasonable hourly rate AND you trust their part sourcing capability (or get ready to begin sourcing yourself).
Good luck...
