I am pretty sure you can't just throw away computers here in Japan. Home electronics in general (like TVs) have to be collected for recycling by law. You can sell them to second-hand shops, definitely, and they always have what they call their "junk" areas of things that probably don't work but might have good parts or be useful to fiddle with.
Used to be that you could find all sorts of goodies that people would throw away for the inorganic collection - that's how I got my first fridge, for example. But they've tightened up the rubbish collection laws and system.
I live in an apartment - best to avoid knocking down walls with my sound system.... (^_^)
I sold the Plaubel 4x5 years ago. Kind of like selling an xke in the 80s. Regret.
Use primarily macs since 86 or so. Don't prattle on about it though. Built several PC gaming rigs but don't have the time for that anymore.
Canon here. 5DmkIII. Buncha glass. Use them professionally and I'm locked in by the expense of replacing the glass. I'd shift over to Nikon just for their Ethernet tether port if I could justify it. These two brands are neck in neck lately. Good for us!
The 5DIII makes me drool, until I see the prices. Even second-hand they hover around the US$2,000 range - there's really no significant saving over buying new.
To be honest, I have no idea what an Ethernet tether port is, but doesn't even used glass sell for pretty decent prices? Shouldn't be too much of a loss if you decide to go Nikon - and I'm pretty sure there are adaptors you can use, though I can't remember whether Nikon glass fits better on Canon bodies or vice-versa. But I tend to agree that both brands are pretty much equal in terms of images created. And no doubt Canon will come out with their own Ethernet tether port soon enough.

It really had me fooled for a good five minutes, as I was struggling to get the dust cover off and what is more I hadn't got any money on me either and you cannot use a debit Card for purchases under £5 in this Shop/Store.
I was really starting to panic that someone else would snap it before I did, it just looked and felt so real I couldn't tell.
That would be a really cruel present to give to a photographer, especially if you had a Canon box to put it in.
I got it as a gift. But having the real McCoy, the weight gave it away. And really, what a terrible thing to have around your normal lenses! Terrible risk factor. Pouring coffe into it I have serious mental agitation.
Ha! Yes, I have heard of those, but don't have one. I was thinking with the second photo "damn that's cheap. Wait, what's the stuff that looks like... is that foam? Oh, of course...." Gotta say, I wouldn't mind one of those cups either. As I don't have the real thing, it wouldn't be too painful to pour tea into. I hope....
If I were to take out a Second Mortgage would that lens if it were real, be a good one to buy or is it the kind of lens you would use for Special purposes only.

24-105 is a general purpose zoom, it would cover probably 90% of what most people would need. I have a similar Nikon lens, 24-120 and it works well. I shoot a full frame digital, in addition to film so that's a moderately wide to short telephoto range.
I believe your Canon is the APS sized sensor, so multiply the focal length by 1.5 to get to the equivalent 35mm length. Thus the "normal" 50mm length on film, acts like a 75mm short tele/portrait lens on the reduced sensor size. You wouldn't have as much wide angle coverage as on 35mm, but much more on the telephoto end.
One feature I find very valuable is the image stabilization/vibration reduction. It generally adds about 2 stops of hand holdability in low light. The old rule of thumb is minimum shutter speed is 1/ focal length. So our 50mm lens can't be hand held at less than 1/50 second. With VR it could be hand held at 1/15.
I struggle taking pictures of landscapes... Objects - in motion or standing - seem to work better for me. But when it comes to say buildings or so I can't get much out of my work... Also, photoshopping a picture is a "no go" for me...
When it comes to buildings, I am more so a fan of my phone. Works well and does some great pictures...
Oh, I could have done some pictures in Hamburg today. Did a spontanious "mini road trip" to Hamburg... 130 km per direction. Just to visit someone, who is supposed to be breaking a full 1989 XJ-S V12 but as I got there, all I saw was a burnt out XJ-S V12 with more flame damage than useable parts. Even the valve covers had melted. So much to some parts for my restoration...
Camera Phones are not ideal for everything, perhaps you should have taken your digital Camera but I'll leave the 'Tips' to Someday and Jagboi, who know a lot more about taking photos than me.
