radio automatic volume control feature

Just read in my owner's manual that the radio should have an AVC feature, as described below. Holding down the volume button does not seem to do anything. Does this work on anyone else's vehicle?

If you have SatNav then it's one of the presets on the screen where you set the various volume levels.

Page 257 in my handbook.

No satnav. Base radio with Alpine amp/speakers. Would like AVC active as it's one thing I miss since I got this car.
