Default Diff output shaft

I've replaced the oil seal and crush sleeve on my differential. The nut sits in about the same place as it was when I took it off. How should I check if it is too tight, or too loose? I can feel a little play still when I wiggle the caliper mounting plate.

I simply use a huge shifter and CAREFULLY wind that nut down down whilst "feeling" the play until I am satisfied it as I like it, which is near as damn to zero.

Obviously with the output shaft securely clamped in the jaws of a large bench vice.
