I joined our local club 34 years ago and I could not believe the conversations that were being bandied around about the trials and tribulations of Jaguar ownership, if a non Jaguar person had walked into the room he would have thought we were all masochistic idiots for owning cars that gave us so much grief.
I came to the decision that one dosen’t own a Jag, it owns you!

Not a real ad. It’s from a movie.

All-in-all, I like cruising in a car that looks great and is somewhat rare on the road. So if that makes me shallow, I don't care.

Let me preface by saying I always have a soft spot in my heart for Jaguar. Maybe it's knowing they survived a fire that nearly destroyed Browns Lane; maybe it's knowing they barely survived the dark days of British Leyland, or maybe it's just because I was born just seven miles from Castle Bromwich.

I would hesitate to call Jaguar owners 'shallow' or 'superficial' because they truly enjoy driving something that is special. Here in the City of Excess that is Newport Beach, there are more BMWs and Mercedes than Chevrolets. Many people want the 'image' of having a BMW or Mercedes as they feel a certain status is attached. The same status is often not conveyed to having a Jaguar (Jag-Wire to the locals), so anyone driving a Jaguar is really someone who doesn't care about status.

I guess that means Jaguar owners are NOT shallow.

Maybe not shallow but perhaps a little vain.

Shallow? How does one define shallow? What does it mean to be shallow when experiencing or buying into a brand? Maybe anything beyond a Honda Civic is ego-defining waste and indulgence.

Jaaaags are definitely self-defining creations. Driving is a statement easily read by others, sometimes, though not often, a negative. How many of us have a vision of the cliche Vette driver. How many of us have known the cliche Vette driver.

I enjoy the envy. It's certainly a choice, not just of make and model, but of how one approaches ones very existence. It's not practical. It's not a "family" car. It's not a car (XK/XKR) most wives give approval for (who asks?) There still is something rakish about it, and there should be. We need that in this world of crossovers and SUVs and melted blobs of compromise and capitulation.

A Jaaaag still is a bit of a thumb in the eye, and if that is shallow, then by the gods let us all celebrate in the lack of depth in our pool.

cheers

I'm shallow. If I wasnt, I'd buy a cayman that would do everything that my f type does - probably better - but wouldnt do it as prettily or noisily.

Jags are in my blood. They are a little different and it is nice to have something different. Before I had Jags I had volvos. Volvos are another car that get a very loyal following on the forums. I think it has to do with a seige mentality, i.e. "what made you decide to buy a volvo/jag?". But Jags have more class, and more admirers, which appeals to my ego.

Did I mention that I am shallow?

The most important purchasing questions:

"Does the car look cool?"
"Can the car get you laid?"

I confess my 2005 X-type gave me a great appreciation for a well-made and VERY reliable car. The only other car this solid was my 1977 Chevy Nova. ($90 of repairs in 40K miles.) My XF replaced a 2000 Corvette. My XF (if in the silly racing flag mode) gives up nothing to it in cornering, braking, or acceleration (below 100).

I laid on my back a lot with my Porsche 944 fixing things.

So far that hasn't happened with the Jaguar.

My Jaguar looks cool in the fall, but sometimes in the winter it looks cold. In the summer it looks hot, perhaps too hot.

Definition of shallow 1 : having little depth
  • shallow water

2 : having little extension inward or backward
  • office buildings have taken the form of shallow slabs
  • —Lewis Mumford

3 a : penetrating only the easily or quickly perceived
  • shallow generalizations
b : lacking in depth of knowledge, thought, or feeling
  • a shallow demagogue

4 : displacing comparatively little air : weak
  • shallow breathing

I don't think we Jag owners are lacking depth of knowledge, thought or feeling. I quite think the opposite.

In any group of car owners beyond basic transportation, there is going to be some percentage of people that buy the car to show off an brag. Those people are shallow. If you buy the car because it makes you happy for whatever reason, then you're in the clear.
