Default Undertray repair

Like most XK8s, ours came to us with a damaged front undertray. Because the new part is over $500 USD, we decided to do a “cosmetic” repair on the passenger side. We used a 12” x 12” sheet of ABS plastic cut to a 1/4 pie shape and fixed with panel plugs thru the factory mounting holes in the lower bumper. Inexpensive and repeatable.

Nice! Looks like a factory part.

Looks great! And sturdy, too. I've been using Gorilla tape, heated by the sun and 'ironed' with a screwdriver handle or a ball peen hammer, but this looks much better. BTW, Do You heat it to shape it? Any other tips?

Best, Rick

Are the ends separate from the center “bar” or is it all one piece (???) like the factory part.

if all one piece you should sell on the forum marketplace. Under $100 would be a winner .

Once mounted the 1/16” ABS sheet conformed well to the gentle curves of the lower bumper edge without heating. I made a paper template of the rounded edge and transferred that to cardboard for a test fit. The template was then used to mark the plastic for cutting. I used an ultra fine blade on a jigsaw for the cut. Lining up the factory holes in the bumper with the plastic piece was the biggest challenge. A small L-bracket was used to attach the plastic to both the wheel well liner and the broken end of the undertray horizontal member.

MVMonarch,

Thanx for sharing. I'm going to try this next time one of my family presents me with a car broken by an unlucky animal. Now, if there were only a way to repair AC condensors and radiators.

Best, Rick
