Cheap approved X-type ATF found!
After many nights of searching I found the following information.
The Jatco JF506E transmission is used in other vehicles under different names.
2002+ Volkswagen GTI
2002-03 VW Jetta
2004+ VW Golf
VW calls the Jatco a "09A" 5sp Tiptronic which calls for fluid part # G 052 990 A2
2002+ Land Rover Freelander
Land Rover calls the jatco what it is "JF506E" which calls for LRN402G aka Texaco N402 fluid
2002-? Mazda MPV 5f31j
2003-? Mazda 6 5f31j
Mazda calls the jatco a "5f31j" which calls out M-III ATF fluid (this is a specific mazda fluid)
Jaguar X-Type
Calls for the following fluid specs
Esso LT 71141; Shell ATF 3403 M115; Shell M1375.4; MERCON V XT-5-QM ATF; IDEMITSU K17; Jatco 3100 PL085
I then found the following fluid which has been tested and passes the specs for:
Volkswagen - G052 990
Land Rover - Texaco N402
Jaguar - Shell M1375.4 (also Idemitsu's K17 and BMW's LT71141)
These approvals are enough to make me feel very comfortable putting this in my X-type, but I added the info so you can decide for yourself.

Someone has to be first. Let us know how it works out.
Bear in mind, the transmissions, are not the same from manufacturer to manfacturer. Hence the different fluids they
are calling for. Each transmission is built to that manufacturers specs. So one fluid may not be compatible in another mfr trans.
Just my 2 cents, and I have been know to be wrong.
Good researching though. Now we just need the real world application.

Excellent Job...I was was wondering about this Castrol product myself..
Also Valvoline MaxLife ATF is also approved or recommended for the JAG's JATCO, which is a synthetic based ATF

Myself and Bojangles (great write-up by Bo)have already recently did the X-fer case and Diff..Search this forum...But I think I will be doing the tranny soon..I can get the Castrol ATF mentioned above, at Advanced Auto

I was just curious as to what fluid you used for the transfer case? It's on my to-do list in the next few weeks. I read that sta-lube was the only alternative to the expensive fluid from Jaguar. http://www.performanceonline.com/sto...654&page=1

I used Royal Purple in both the X-fer case and the rear Differential....Excellent lube oil.

That article scared me from the Royal purple. I still might order the sta-lube brand depending on any other information I can find.

Yeah..I've read that article before too..I think that guy is a little on the skeptical side because he can't get or find any info from Royal Purple or Red Line (can't blame them for not sharing it with a nobody)...He did nothing special in his blog, other than to copy verbatim, the specs and info right out of the JTIS (as anybody could do)..lastly, he never looked into any alternatives other than what was printed in the JTIS..So his blog is kind of really worthless and non informative...I wouldn't put too much credence in what he says.

After a few years of Ford and Mercedes transmission trouble, I switched to Mobil 1 synthetic ATF in everything. Problems solved. However, I also install a trans drain plug on everything and change 4 quarts during every oil change. That way the trans always has 30% fresh fluid at each oil change.
While the M1 trans fluid may not specifically meet certain manufacturers specs, it is a very robust fluid, capable of functioning well under extreme heat conditions. Here in roasting hot South Florida, a robust fluid (HTS, high thermal stability) is more important.
So, Redline and Amsoil may not meet manufacturers specs by definition, I strongly suspect they are more than good enough.

it was suggested some time ago on this forum that the castrol multi import can be used in the x type transmission.....i used it about 6 months ago and my transmission has not died....yet.
though last week i found 6 liters of original x type atf for $40 on craigslist...yep...i bought it!!!

I might have posted on another thread a while back. Here it is again as I haven't logged on here for awhile. I drain and filled at 60k miles with Merkon V.then did it again with Castrol Import at 75k miles. The car is at 116k miles now. I plan to do another drain and fill with Valvoline Maxlife. No issues.

I have been using the Castrol multi import atf for over a year, and it has been working fine. I also used Lucas auto trans conditioner. I did flush about 20 liters through the critter before it started coming out clean.....We will see how things go.
I also flushed out, and used the same fluid in my XK8, because it needs the same spec. So far, so good in that one too. I worry more about that trans, than the X Type's, and ended up flushing about 50 liters through it, before things started coming out clean. Thank God Autozone takes back used oil. I had a bunch of it, from these 2 cars...
I am taking the X Type to the Rocky Mountains in a couple of weeks. That should be the test. Right now the shifts are crisper than I ever remember. The car has almost 90,000 miles on it, and I changed all the driveline fluids for this little trip. I don't think they were ever done before.....be cool.....Mike

ALWAYS!! install the fill plug in the top of the trans, before you start the car. On the last fill I added the Lucas transmission treatment, and filled the unit to the factory spec, which is kind of a pain, but doing this once every 35,000 miles shouldn't be too bad.
This initial flush and fill took a little over 3 hours.....I figure every 35,000 miles should be fine. Let's hope she lives a long time now......Mike

I measured what came out, and put the same amount of clean fluid back into the fill hole on top of the trans. I ran the car through the gears for about 10 minutes, on the jack stands, and repeated the operation until the fluid was coming out the same color as it was going in.

Thanks for the details on how you flushed your tranny, I'm about to do it for the second time in the last six months! It seems the people who charged me a lot of money to "flush and change" my transmission oil, merely topped it off. This after seeing and showing me what the then current fluid looked like, it was as black as Satan's heart!
I noticed you used Lucas Transmission Fix in your final fill. What changed your mind about using additives in the tranny? (the quote below is from my threat back in July 2015 regarding "Trans Tune's Sea Foam"
I would not put any additive in your trans, and make sure you are using the correct fluid, according to your manual, or on posts on this forum. If the fluids needed any additive, don't you think they would have already put it in, These cats are pretty picky about what they eat......Be cool....Mike:

UK source of good ATF for the 5-speed JATCO auto
I know this is an old thread, but worth updating. There is strong evidence that the
is the correct fluid for the six speed auto box fitted to later cars (Jaguar part number C2S5162
, but that the older 5-speed JATCO box needs a different fluid. Jaguar specify Ford spec WSS-M2C922-A1 which is RED in colour.
UK owners can obtain the latter fluid from the online Ravenol UK shop as 'Ravenol JF506E' fluid and it is specifically specced for the older X-Type, and reasonably priced at <£9.99 a litre. Ravenol are well known in motor racing circles and are a German company.
