2001 x-type 2.5 petrol auto...Can anyone advise me on a slight whining noise when both stationary and moving, and from cold.The noise increases and decreases along with the revs.Appreciate any advice.Thanks.

 

The usual suspects would be alternator or power steering pump, but you should also check belts and tensioners depending on the actual sound.
Invest in a mechanics stethoscope (just a few dollars) to help you pinpoint the source before you embark on any wholesale parts changes.

 

If it’s coming thru your speakers it’s likely a voltage problem

often a “whining” noise comes from the cars speakers if there is a problem with a low battery or alternator.
