A/C Please help! Working intermittently

Hi Guys,

I am looking for some ac help.

Im having the common issue guys have with my ac working well one day nice and ice cold then the next day it’s warm. Also noticed the two left driver side vents blow warmer air than the cooler passenger vents when it’s not working right also. Also noticed that the exterior lcd on my 2004 jag x type isn’t working but read it should still work in Manila mode just not auto. Read a tsb about a possible compressor O ring 🤷*♂️?

Ive read and googled whatever I can but I don’t see any clear solutions.

Could you please help with a step by step course of action, post or where I can find the info to fix this annoying air conditioning problem once and for all?

Thanks again,

Jay

Try the "stepper motors" reset. Pay attention to the sequence and where the air should be coming from. It could be a failing stepper. As for the other fairly common thing, the a/c compressor motor has a "valve" ( not the best description) that some people have removed, turned it 180° and compressor then works. Idt this is your problem as you have intermittent cold air. The "valve" problem usually acts sort of like low freon.

I’ll give the stepper motor cycle reset a try and thanks for the quick reply and helpful insights. If that doesn’t work, I’ll try to check that second possible solution out as a try as well.

The flapper reset didn’t work. I’ll have to try the other shortly

BUT....... did the airflow change to the correct outlets? If one or more of the steppers or flaps are not working correctly, it could explain the different temperatures from outlets. Bear in mind the heater core ALWAYS has hot fluid running through it. If a flap or motor is not diverting correctly, even with the A/C on, you can get too warm air or inconsistent (side to side) air temperatures.

You are low on a freon charge. Get the freon topped up and then see what you have. Common issue with the X-Type.

I had the 'one side is colder than the other side' complaint when I worked at the dealer.
Like Thermo says, it usually turned out to be a low refrigerant charge.
The X400 is pretty sensitive about this.

@Thermo & Motor, yeah well there's that, LOL!! Sometimes we neglect the simplest answer.

OMG I'm reading through this thread and thought of something with my own AC problems.

For background: 04 x type 3.0, AC clutch engages, blend doors are working, Freon charged, no cold air......

Here's the question: I recently pulled the headliner to replace the sagging material. when reinstalling, I must have pinched a wire because I kept blowing a fuse that also went to the blower motor. I haven't had time to go through the harness. So I simply unplugged the 2 roof harnesses on the a-pillars. Could this be affecting a temperature sensor and stopping the system from directing AC air through the cabin?

I was at the point where I thought the compressor might be bad despite the clutch being functional.
