Drivers Seat Very Loose
 

Hi,

The drivers seat on my x-type has suddenly become loose and has a fairly large tilt now when accelerating or braking. I've seen some of the threads on the 'rocking seat' issue on earlier x-types but this seems far more pronounced than that issue. The electric adjustment to tilt the base of the seat back and forth has also stopped working at the same time. The other electric adjustments to slide the seat back and forth, to tilt the back and to adjust the lumber support are still working fine. Does anyone have any ideas what the issue might be and how much it might cost to rectify please?

Once again, Jaguar addressed this issue a long time ago.
Jaguar issued TSBs (the ones that nobody reads) for the seat repair.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I'd seen the input from Jaguar regarding the fix for the rocking chair issue but wasn't sure if it related to my issue or not. In my case the seat pitches freely all the way back and forth to the full extent that the electric adjustment normally allows. The electric adjustment has no effect whatsoever on the seat.

Do you think the jaguar fix would solve my issue as I got the impression that it was meant to remedy a slight looseness rather than a large swing of the seat? Would it also resolve the lack of electric adjustment?

I'd really appreciate your thoughts.

rocking seat is caused by excessive play in one of the power set motors, thus yes "lack of electric adjustment". You may also have stripped gears on the adjustment assembly.

So, upon checking the VIN numbers on the technical bulletins, they don't relate to my car. With reference to the stripped gears issue, what should I be looking for or what parts do I need to go looking on ebay for?!

Thanks ever so much for this Dell. Just to confirm, the motor you've suggested is for the tilt adjustment on the base of the seat right (which is what I need)? Rather than the back of the seat? Or is it the same part for both? (sorry for all the questions!)

There are 3 "motors" with gears that strip and fail.
1. Forward/backward
2. Up/down
3. Tilt.
There is another that I have never seen anyone post about which is the rear upright seat portion forward/back adjustment. I think probably because it is so seldom used compared to the others.

There is a repair kit made for a motor coach (searchable in this forum for this problem) that works on our X's with metal gears replacing the nylon/plastic ones but, I understand it is not real easy to install with drilling etc. Embedded in this thread are also links to replacement plastic and metal only gears.

My issue is definitely the tilt function of the base. The motor appears to still be functioning as I can hear it working when I move the switch. Does that mean it's the gears that have become stripped and if so, can you narrow it down to what part I need please? I've looked through the link that you posted but it seems to relate to the up/down motor rather than tilt.

As I said, different function but same basic tear down. The motor is not the problem usually, hence the plastic and metal gear you can buy. Read, read and then read some more. It's self explanatory.

Thanks Dell. I'm just trying to get at where I can get the part from as everything I can find on ebay doesn't specifically mention the 'tilt' adjustment. Like the below description from an item. Do you believe it's the same gear kit regardless of which adjustment you're trying to repair?
