Hello Chaps! New X Type Owner

Hello Chaps,
I posted in here a few weeks back mentioning I was looking for an X Type, and today I bought it. I'm quite pleased with it, 2006 X Type SE Estate (Sportwagon) 2.2 Turbo Diesel. It has a nice shade of grey paint, and a full grey leather interior. I drove it home 110 miles and it was very nice indeed. It's also rocket fast! There are two little issues though maybe you can help me with: 1) The rear parking sensors aren't working, I've checked the fuse. 2) The electro chromatic rear view mirror doesn't seem to be working. On my XJ8 a little green light would be lit if I switched it on, there are no lights here. I've put a couple of pics at the bottom, but they are from the Dealer's website so aren't great. Thanks Guys! Stu. |

Hi there Stu and congrats on the new X type............lovely lookin car!! Nice pics thanks for sharing! I know you said its lighning fast and it is, for a diesel, same engine as the FordMondeo ST Tdci I had a while back. That put out 155bhp and the X is 153bhp iirc...........I got mine remapped to 195bhp and that was a VERY quick oil burner.............Is this something you've considered or just happy as is? You do know the curtains will be twitching now................Oh did you see so and so has a Jaguar? Hmmm no hiding money is there......lol Enjoy mate |
Stu, first, check to see if your backup lights work. I bet you will find that the backup lights are not working either. If this is the case, then your problem lies more with the wiring to the backup lights than the parking aide system. The parking aide system uses a signal from the reverse lights to engage the system and also cause the electro-chromatic mirror to perform its function in reverse.
If you need any assistance, let me know. |

Where would the speaker be located on the Estate version? Thanks for the help so far, Stu. |
Hi Stu!
where'd you get those rims? NICE! |

Stu, I believe that the parking sensor speaker is located in the left rear of the car (your passenger side). The other check that I would tell you to try is to put the car in REVERSE and then get out of the car and put your ear next to each of the 4 sensors. You should hear a high pitch squeal/clicking sound. If you hear that, then your speaker is toast. If you don't hear any sound from all 4 sensors, then odds are your problem lies with the parking aide computer. If 1 of the sensors is not clicking/chirping, then you have a bad sensor (granted, this should result in a long tone as soon as you put the car in REVERSE).
How are you with a multimeter? If you want to get into doing electrical checks, let me know and I will try to step you through everything. |
Thanks Thermo, I'll get onto that tomorrow if I get the chance. My X isn't on the road yet, it's awaiting attention on our drive, I'm still using my XJ8 whilst I sort everything out. I'll see if I can pull it out tomorrow and test it.
I'm ok with electrics on cars (I'm a X308 Veteran :P ) but have never used a multimeter, that's a Sean B job! LOL |
Congrats Stu , happy safe driving :)

Hello! I've been away for a few days so haven't been able to post.
I've checked the sensors like Thermo suggested and I can hear them making a high pitched whining sound, so I guess it's the speaker? Is there a wiring diagram for the 2005 X Type Estate where I could follow the wiring and replace the speaker with another? I'm thinking any small speaker will do? Thanks, Stu. |
Stu, all that I can tell you is to access the spare tire area and you will find the parking aide computer there. If you look, you will see a red/blue wire and a blue wire running off to a corner of the car in the rear. Follow those wires. Those wires will lead you to the speaker.
As for making "any speaker work", not quite so fast. once you find the speaker, pull the speaker from its mount. If you look on the back of the speaker where the magnet is, you should see some writing there. Hopefully you will see something to the effect of "8 ohm" or a number with what looks like an "o" that has feet (this is the ohm symbol). You have to match up this resistance with the same resistance speaker. Going with a lower resistance speaker can lead to damage to the computer. Going with a higher resistance may or may not lead to a quieter tone. If in doubt, take a picture of the back of the speaker and post it here. I will be able to make heads or tails of it from there. |

Here is what type of parking sensor system I have, it is the newer type for the 04 & up models. I have found the OEM speakers on the website I lifted this from for £6.00 which is very cheap.
This unit has 3 plugs coming out of it. |
