Need audio help pls!

So i take my 2002 X-Type in to the jaguar dealer for its 100k checkup. I come back and pick it up the next day and find that the large speakers in the door panels do not work! All 4 somehow got blown. I told them this and they played innocent saying that they didnt even touch the speakers and that they were just old. Then they rubbed salt in the wound by saying that it would cost 1k to repair/replace all 4 speakers....Keeping myself from punching the service rep i walked out of the dealer and started thinking about aftermarket alternatives. I looked on newegg and found that audio speakers are not that expensive. My questions is, i read that the premium audio speakers in my jag are rated at 1ohm and most of the speakers on newegg are at 4ohm. Now i have no idea what this means, just that there is a difference. Can i take regular 4 ohm car speakers and (following a great guide on here about door panel removal) just pop the old ones out and new ones in?

Thanks!

That's a nice dealer that you have there... First, they don't own up to messing up your stereo, and then they quote you a ridiculous price on fixing the wrong problem!!!

$1000 for replacement of stock speakers!!!!!! Hahahahahahah! You could put some very high end replacements in there for less! Anyways....

First of all, your speakers are fine. When a speaker blows, it almost always still plays - it just sounds blown. The odds of the voice coils on all 4 speakers getting fried to the point of not even responding to music is almost 0%. The problem isn't your speakers.

I would put money on a blown fuse. It makes perfect sense. If the dealer was under the hood and arc'd something, fuses can easily blow. They wouldn't have had to touch the radio. Start there. Check the fuse boxes (there should be one under the hood and another under the dash on the driver's side).

If all the fuses are ok, I would say that the problem is your radio.

sounds like your fiber optic loop could have come undone.. check right above your foot on the drivers side .. left foot under dash.. there is a D2B connector that sometimes can pop out if caught on a boot. if this loop is open then your whole system doesnt work.

Well, i checked all the cables under and near the drivers side and they all look to me to be connected. Also, i looked at the fuses in the cabin and without taking them out they also look fine (i dont know if i can tell by just looking, but none were charred). I complained to the service manager and he is going to have his audio specialist look at it on monday. I dont think that the radio is broken because the two speakers near the door handles still work and the sub still works, its just the rest that dont work. Anything else that i can check myself?

Thanks!

You can't tell if you have a blown fuse without pulling it out unless you have a tester. Just pull them out one by one and look at the metal wire on the inside of the fuse - if it's broken, the fuse is blown. If all your fuses test out ok, then check back and we can give other ideas.

just buy new 61/2 speakers, do it yourself, door panels come of and on easy.

It doesn't sound like you need new speakers. Does the radio work intermittently? If so...

Unplug the CD Changer in the trunk, if you have one, and see if that solves your problem. It sounds like it could be the fiber cable, which is apparently what's wrong with my CD Changer, and which is exactly why it's unplugged.

I seriously doubt you need new speakers in all 4 doors. I've installed speakers in my X and I can tell you that it's definitely not $1k worth of work. I did installed them all in about 2 hours.

Well masteroc let the "audio specialist" take a look and see what he finds. From the sounds of it you are saying your tweeters (small speakers that put out the highs/voice) work but your door speakers (6.5) are inop??? Personally I'd check fuses and as they have said it could possibly be the fiber optic cable. If I were you I'd take the fuses out and see if any (any related to the radio/amp) are blown. It seems obsurd for someone to say all 4 speakers are blown but for whatever reason we've had a few people here on the forums say they had all 4 speakers replaced (by dealer under warranty.) I've never had 4 speakers break at one period of time nor have I had any speaker really fail altogether. Keep us updated with what they say so we can help you the best we can.

DO NOT pay anyone to do the speaker install for you, if it is the speakers. The door panels on the jag are the easiest I've ever taken off in my life. Many times my problem is putting the panel back on and sticking like it did before I took it off, not the case on the jag they are just as easy off as they are on. Here are pics of what the speakers look like removed and in comparison to the stock speaker (at least what they are on my base sound system.)

Here is a pair of component speaker set (crunch gts6.5c) in comparison to the stock speaker.

How did you mount the aftermarket 6.5s?

RE: Need audio help pls!

I never installed them I was removing the door panel to lube the door handle and figured I'd take pics to show people behind the door panel when they need it. If I were going to do it I'd probably cut rings from mdf.
