New owner of a used 2002 X Type and delighted to find such wisdom online.
Can anyone help with instructions on how to remove Transfer case to investigate what I think is bearing noise! Any help would be very much appreciated. |
You may want to look at the carrier bearing on the rear drive shaft for your noise.

The plot thickens!
Thanks Bud
I have already listened to carrier bearing with stethoscope while on jack stands and it is running silent. Stethoscope hunting reveals rough noise at junction of prop shaft and transfer case. so I undid shaft coupler to inspect what appears to be a CV joint on shaft. Bit of lash there but nothing significant. Think I need to go deeper! Any opinions would be gratefully be appreciated. :icon_imnotworthy: |
The service manual in pdf format.
Workshop Manual in PDF. (thanks to LCGI) http://www.mediafire.com/download/xp...Manual.pdf.zip |
Wow Bud, Thanks to you and LCGI for the info so quickly. I really appreciate your efforts to help me out. Will keep you posted on findings. Thanks again.

Seems like all you needed was the reference material.
Check your local parts store, Haynes has an X-Type version now. |
Progress
I think I will have to take it to a Transmission Shop to see if they can diagnose further and estimate cost of repair. That will feel like signing a blank check lol.
Will let you know the outcome. Many thanks for your support and interest. |
Fixed
Hi Bud,
Well I had a shop remove and inspect the TC and the bearings were shot. There was very little oil if any in the case and it was a mess. Anyway I was fortunate to find a used one at a local wreckers for a great price and had the shop inspect and re install. My X Type is running like a sewing machine now. Thanks again for your help. |
