Steering wheel removal - NO KEY
I need to remove a steering wheel from a 2006 X-Type that is in a junkyard. There is no key, and the steering wheel is locked. Is there an easy way to accomplish this? I didn’t think so. 😁 Is there a not so easy way to do it? I need to be able to rotate the wheel to get to the screws that hold the airbag on so I can get the wheel off. Any suggestions are appreciated! Thanks, Gary |
I can't see position of wheel determining the removal. The access holes are fixed and rotate with the wheel for bag removal.

Yeah, I should have mentioned that this particular steering wheel has the controls on the spokes of the wheel and the screws to remove the airbag are on the back, not on the side. The style in the videos doesn’t require that the wheel be turned to get to the screws. The style I’m dealing with does. undo bolt on flexible coupling in footwell, undo bolts holding steering shaft to armature under dash and lift the whole assembly out.

Okay, armed with a drill, hammer, and several other equally useless tools, I set out to get that steering wheel. I started by removing the screws that hold the shroud around the steering column. The plastic housing on the left side of the steering column, circled in red, was unceremoniously removed. That exposed the silver pin, pointed out in red.
