Default is the temp level normal

today i was stuck in traffic for about 20 min. my temp gauge went all the way to 3/4 mark. i have never seen it do that before. i actually switched the car off. then when i turned it on and drove it went back to its normal spot, just below half. is that normal? i checked the coolant in the little tack its on max.

"Normal" is a hair below half. Always. If it spiked up on you, check for leaks in the coolant tank (tends to crack around the nipple where the rubbre hose connects at the top of the expansion tank,) or check that your radiator fans are running properly - stuff like that.

If there's something going on you should see that behavior again.

thanks. i will keep a close eye on the gauge. today i drove to work 15m and the needle was on its normal position. the coolant level is on max. no signs of coolant leak on my drive way. thanks a lot.

it shoulfn't have spiked unless it was 90 degrees outside, but certainly not at this tmie of year, might be time for a coolant flush, also check to make sure your fans are working.

if the gauge goes above half way there is a issue somewhere. in tx with above 100 degrees in traffic the gauge shouldnt move above half way. first thing i would check is fans. when the vehicle is fully warm turn on the a/c and check your fans.
