Default Cam Belt fitting problem 2.2 diesel

Hello All. Help please, feeling a bit sick!
An independent Jag specialist has had a problem whilst replacing the belt on my car. (2015 2.2, 83k miles).
He said that initially there was a problem with a magnetic ring? on the crank pulley, and it had not been refitted properly, causing it to miss time and run badly on start up. After further investigation, he's now stated that the pulley was possibly not aligned correctly on reassembly, and the engine has lost compression on one cylinder, most likely because of a bent valve. The car was only running for a few seconds.
I'm hoping that this is simple as it possibly can be when the head is removed, but have a horrible feeling that the damage may be more extensive, or terminal, such as piston and bore damage if the valve head has broken off, rocker arm bent, or further damage to any of the other 3 combustion chambers/valves.
What are your thoughts please folks? HAs anyone had a similar experience? Any recommended actions before this gets serious? (it is already in my head!)
Thank you.
Trev
