Default Considering a 2009 xf to buy atm. ANY advice?

Hi Guys,

I love the forum and have owned a 2002 s type and a 2004 x type.

I am now looking to replace my x type as it was in an accident.

I am unfamiliar with these cars but the
it has 160,000kms (Ontario, Canada) on it, and we’ll maintained

Its going to be near the top end of my budget and I want to know if you guys can tell me what are the most likely problems I’ll encounter so I can make a purchase decision on it. I have done some work on my own cars in the past but and not a huge gear head type guy so I’m not afraid of some work with the experts we have here to help like I’ve had in the past! Saved tons of money!!

How will it do in the snow as a rear wheel and does anyone have any links to posts to point me to as to find some more information on these beauty cars?

Many Many thanks!!

Lots of info on here. Like any car as it gets up in miles there are lots of potential areas that may need work

A few basic ones - the timing chains on the 5.0 can wear and need replacement. The 2009 should have the 4.2 engine and not sure it's as much of an issue there. Some reports of leaking rear diff on the 2009 XF but would prob have happened by now. Check all electricals - door actuators, etc. trunk wire can break and make it hard to open (pretty easy repair)

Main systemic issue is cooling system. Like many modern cars it uses a lot of plastics and they go brittle and age. Various crossover pipes, header tank, other cooling pipes. And the coolant pump itself. All basically maintenance items. Lots of detail on here how to do it.

I drive mine year round incl in snow in New England. Done a run from Ottawa to Boston in a big snowstorm. So it can do it. Winter tires and a gentle right foot are essential. And I wouldn't say it's great - but it's ok. Snow mode helps to soften the settings too

Sounds like you're looking for something very well maintained. That's the best place to start. No budget for a slightly more modern AWD? Not a V8 but maybe a better fit for your use?

Quite the mileage it has but if youre an DIY'er than it shouldnt be too complicated as these forums have nice/neat guide forums. Youll need special tools for these maintenance as well (im sure you know that by owning a Jag previously, different size bolts) but ditto on BritCars statements. Most people seem to mention the cooling system being its weakest point in the car. Plus electrical problems which typically 80% of the time, these electrical issues are caused by the battery being drained from all the electrical components this car has. So easy money right there to be spent on new batteries or either on a CTEK battery charger. Due note most new batteries dont come typically fully charged so maybe your best off just getting the charger in future references.
Also note that parts are not cheap on this car and can be a pain to find some parts but thorough researching for those parts it can be found.
