Default Feared the waterpump, got a new hose

So, my XF has been using a little coolant for the last couple of years.
About a year ago I took it in for some 'routine' maintenance (spark plugs, diff service, etc.) and the dealer did a look-around. They noted coolant leaks (did a pressure test)? and told me it would be $1700 to fix. I always assumed that was related to the water pump problems reported on this list. But, I wasn't using coolant very fast so I told them to wait on the repair.

Last Friday, I took my car to a local shop for an oil change. They did a pretty good check and told me that my air filter was super dirty. I was surprised since I try to keep my routine stuff up to date. But when I looked at my records I couldn't find a note were the filter had be changed (WTF, How could I have missed that???). I took that as a good sign for how they looked at things!

But while they were doing the oil/filter i got a call telling me that there was coolant all over the belly pan that they took off for the oil change. I said that I knew I was using a little coolant, but that I was watching things and to please just do the oil.

They called later me to say that after the oil change was done they "pulled it back into the shop" and did a pressure check. They told me that they found a coolant hose was leaking and that they had ordered a new one. They fixed it yesterday.

Now, I'm kind'a ticked that they went further than I wanted, but based on them finding the black air filter, perhaps it was a good thing. They have done other work for me and i believe they're pretty good.

At this point I'm just feeling good that it didn't seem to be the water pump.

However, despite owning Land/Range Rovers, and servicing Jaguars, they were not familiar with what I've come to believe is a common problem with the water pumps of V6/AWD XFs.

Are the water pumps really a problem, or has it only been made to seem so but the members of this mailing list that have had pump problems?

Oh, my car has 57K miles on it.

Brave man, monitoring leaking CW level.

I assume you have the AJ126S V6 S.C 3.0ltr.?

Plastic pipes and CW pump were / are an issue. My 2013 having gone through 2 of the old 3 part type pumps in 65K, and now on the latest 2 part revision pump, small bore plastic vent lines and an expansion tank, the front alloy front coolant pipes changed out as preventative measure.

Since you have the 2015 modal, the two part pump may have already have been fitted.

Plastic pipes and small bore fittings can leak, weep and cause issues.
I would not rule out your water pump yet. If you have a cell phone - borescope attachment have a look at the CW water pump tell tail port underneath the pump for weepage.
Mine was leaking a little for sometime, but difficult to find, even having been checked at JLR service dept. Leaking about 500ml a month.

I went through it fully myself when the JLR service plan ran out, and did the job and inspection myself.

The air filter will be on JLR service interval, at some ridiculous interval, so Yes it could be very black and dirty.

With the year and age of your car I can't believe the water pump has not leaked and been replaced already?
It's just about guaranteed to happen? At last count Jaguar has revised the water pump about 5 times. The current part number ends in 3909.

Consider getting all the plastic parts changed out to Aluminum. That eliminates the poor design Jaguar used on many cooling parts.
Currently we have;
Both front cooling pipes in Aluminum
Water pump to oil cooler brick tube in Aluminum
Thermostat housing in Aluminum.
IF you have the V-6 the rear water manifold in Aluminum

There are a number of kits out now with some or all of these upgraded parts so that's worth a look?
Upgraded Cooling Kit

Note the one I listed is missing the Aluminum Thermostat Housing but there are many of these kits out there now.
