Some questions about the XF (Potential buyer)
 

Hey guys!

I am interested in possibly purchasing a 2009/2010 - XF Premium Luxury or Supercharged..

The online reviews seem to be pretty solid and in favor of these models but a mechanic friend told me they have lots of reliability issues. Id like to ask you owners firstly your opinion and secondly what are the major things to look for when buying a used 2009/2010 model..

Is there a list of common issues to mindful of before purchasing?

They have no more issues than any other MB, BMW, Porsche or Audi in the same class. And when they break or need repair it's pricey.
This subject has been asked by many including myself, and addressed many times before in the forum so just search around awhile. I enjoy my XFR immensely, but basically having a luxury and sports car in one has a price.

Yup pretty much my thoughts exactly. I have been looking around and see some common things such as the gear selector and the vents, if there is anything else that are common to check when looking at or test driving the car please share.

I owned a 2009 Premium Luxury. Loved it. I swapped out for a 2009 Supercharged. Love it more.

To answer your question more directly, the issues I have heard of/dealt with:

Dashboard leather- Look for separation... Better yet, get one that has been replaced. Original had glue separation issues. Had that replaced on first one.
Rear differential- I hear it has leaking probs... Had that fixed on second one.

Haha yea the more I look the more im like maybe I should just limit myself to the supercharged.. That way, no regrets later.. I need to see what the difference is insurance wise.. Was there a noticeable difference on yours after you changed?

Be sure and run a CarFax report BEFORE you buy. It may not catch everything that's been done but it's a better than a shot in the dark.

Yes, do a search of the forum for info. I remember that this was a problem with early cars for which there was no fix. If the car is one of the affected ones I'd pass it by.

Other than that, and similar to the S-Types, these are pretty reliable and long-lived cars. They're just expensive to fix...

Before jumping on this one, try to locate a non-dealer repair shop that is in your area. Traveling a long distance to pay big repair bills is not something that you really want to have to do.

Also guys what do you consider being high mileage for these cars? I dont like to buy cars over 70k miles.. So I look preferably below the 70 mark, unless i see a super deal in the 70-80 range.. But I really have something in my head blocking me from getting anything higher than that..

From my experience looking at 5.0 s/c XF's and research here on the forums:

Some faulty water pumps on the 5.0 and 5.0 s/c ($500-$1000 depending on who you go to, but once replaced you wont need to worry about it)
Check suspension bushings (front lower control arms specifically) these wear out on most cars
Dash leather slight ripple near the windshield, not a big deal IMO but some people get this fixed

Get a pre-purchase inspection by a jag/range rover specialist before you buy one, it helps a lot.

Thanks guys! Having trouble finding a S/C model, apart from the obvious cars.com autotrader.com and CL do you guys have any other recommendations to find cars?

I searched for quite a while before I found the one I wanted. It took me about 5 months. The s/c and "r" pop up every so often, but its mostly the regular 5.0's and 4 cyl turbos (2012+).

I used the usual 3 you said, ebay, and just google. I bought mine from a private dealer but had it inspected first by a non-affiliated 3rd party jag repair shop.

Yea seems to be the way.. Either they are the wrong color, wrong interior, or too much mileage..blah haha.. Im looking for 2009 or 2010, but seems like the 2010 is the recommended here.

What year was it they changed the control section to black from silver? Thought it was 2010 no?

Just got off the phone with a Jag service center who had a pretty strong opinion about staying away from the 2009 model.. She said there is an issue (which couldnt explain as no one was available to explain it right now) that jaguar knows about but deny, she said they sent 2 back to dealer, and the 2009 in general is problematic..

Just found an 2010 XKR with 73k miles and an asking price of 26,999.. Thoughts?

Changed from silver to black from 2012 onwards ("facelift").

was the rear differential an issue on the 2010 models also?

I purchased my 2010 Jaguar in Nov 2014 from the dealer. It had 41,000 miles and I paid $26,000 for it. It is faster than my '01 XKR 4.0L Coupe. It has fantastic brakes and if I am easy on the throttle you can easily get 24-28 MPG. I too looked for the S/C model but they are few and expensive. The 390 HP seem plenty for me. The price you mentioned of $26,999 seems very high. Bone up on your negotiating skills. Walk away if they won’t come down in price.
The only complaint I have is the inaccurate gas gauge that seems prevalent on this year and mode, off by 30%!
Be patient and look for the right car and you will be happy with it for a long time. For the price of a Chevy you can drive a Jaguar XF!
