2011 XJL Supercharged - Dead Battery - Underhood terminals?
 

First, I apologize if this has been covered elsewhere, but here goes. The battery in my US 2011 XJL supercharged is as dead as Julius Caesar, and the instructions, as near as I can make out, suggest using a jump starter on a metal tab in the passenger side fuse box to give it just enough juice to get the key fob to open the trunk, where the real jump start can occur. Am I correct in assuming that the tab, shown in the image below, in the red circle, is where the positive connector goes? I gave that a shot, hooked the negative cable to a decent ground point, but it wasn't showing that the connection was correct. So I still have a dead cat in the driveway.

Are there no jump start terminals under the hood that would allow the engine to be fired up? Or is the sequence:
1. Power the system to open the trunk;
2. Open the trunk;
3. Futz around jump starting the car from the battery, itself.

I went out to my 2011 XJL and took pictures of the way to jump start the car when the battery is dead in the truck. I would also read the manual before you try to jump start. I would recommend trying a trickle charger attached overnight and see you you can open the trunk then. If you want to try and jump start, I would wait for the car to become fully charged maybe an hour or so. Note the pictures on the jumping sequence, maybe they will help you. Let me know how you make out. I like your XKR, but you need an XK-E to complete your collection.

you are only to use those tabs to open the trunk and after that you can jump start connecting directly to the battery.

Thanks, everyone. That was exactly what I was looking at. I have one of those small jump starter gizmos that is basically a lithium-ion battery that can be used to start everything from cars to cell phones. Unfortunately, the jumper cables aren't long enough to reach the ground lug that you really need to use, even to open the trunk. My insurance has free roadside assistance, so I called them and got it started, took it to a specialist shop, and they dropped a new battery in, cleared the codes, etc. The car is now clean and running like new again. That'll teach me to leave it sit for three weeks while I drive the XKR. Tough choice sometimes.

You need a CTEK MUS4.3 battery maintainer for whichever Jaguar is not being driven. It comes with 2 sets of connectors, one with alligator clips and the other with ring terminals, that you can leave on each vehicle. That makes it easy to connect the CTEK to either car.

Note that the XJ has an AGM battery, so the CTEK must be set to the cold weather mode (snowflake icon) for the proper charging profile. The XKR has a conventional flooded battery, so set the CTEK to the normal mode (car icon).

Weird electrical gremlins showing up, now. Trunk close button isn't working, automatic driver's side window control will not raise the window all the way up. I noticed after the battery was replaced that some of the other windows behaved the same way, but those are working fine now. I'm hoping that the car just needs some time to fully adjust to the new battery.

Electrical gremlins are signs of a weak battery.

Even though it's a new battery, it might not have been fully charged when it was installed. "New" batteries can sit on the retailer's shelf for months discharging slowly, without ever being charged by the retailer.

If you have a voltmeter, check your battery. If it's less than 12.6 volts, it needs to be recharged. Be sure to always lock your car, even when parked in your garage, to shut down the computers and minimize battery drain.

I just checked the battery voltage. After sitting for about 3 1/2 hours, it read 12.78 volts. Funny thing, without thinking, I hit the trunk close button, and the trunk closed like normal. I'll check the window in the morning.

After replacing the battery, you will almost always need to reset all the windows and reset the trunk lid, that's normal.
