Extended Warranty
 

I'm very excited to be in the process of purchasing a 2014 XJL Supercharged with 49K miles on it.

It's at the tail end of the factory warranty. Extended warranty from Jaguar is $5700 for 4 years up to 100K miles. I've gotten quotes from Endurance for $5K but a little concerned about some of the reviews I've read about not covering expensive repairs.

So my question for the experts...

Buyer beware! A "warranty", by definition, can only be provided by the manufacturer. There are only two Jaguar warranties: (1) the original new car factory warranty and (2) the Jaguar Select Certified Pre Owned (CPO) warranty, available only from Jaguar new car dealers. Everything else is an extended service contract written and administered by a third party insurance company unrelated to Jaguar, even though it may be sold by a Jaguar dealer on its letterhead and the salesperson calls it an extended warranty. He or she knows they're lying, and can get away with it because they're not a lawyer.

CPO is, in my opinion, worth the additional cost. Not all pre-owned Jaguars qualify for this program.

Except for the water pump, the XJ is very reliable. Before buying any third party extended service contract, read it and pay particular attention to the exclusions and limitations provisions. Ambiguous and vague language exists to enable the Administrator to interpret the contract to deny coverage on a technicality. Extended service contracts are high profit items for dealers and they know every trick in the book to convince you to buy one. Resist the high pressure salesperson.

Instead of buying an extended service contract, I recommend putting that monthly premium in a savings account and build a nest egg to fund future repairs.

I have purchased the extended service / warranty from a Jaguar dealer. I have a 2013 XJ SuperSport and at 48k on the odometer and 3 months left on the original warrant for $3700.00. It has proven to be well worth the expense and has relapsed even suspension bushings along with the usual water pump and associated tubing and hoses. I will tell you that each dealer prices this warranty differently and the trick is to find the F and I person at a jaguar dealer that will give you the best price. Just be sure it is the contract that JLR dealers sell. As you are at 49k you are on the bubble of them not wanting to write with less than 1k miles left on factory warranty or less than 1 month. Shop around there are dealers that will price more aggressively.

$3700 is a far cry from $5700 and, based on your positive experience, is making me reconsider my previous advice. Having peace of mind for less than $1,000 a month msu be money well spent.

Stuart I got a better price from Robert Lloyd at the Buckhead location than that at Northpoint. It's up to the dealer ho much margin they want to make.

Thank you for the advice. After reading several reviews of major carriers, I ended up finding a 14 XJR LWB CPO with 3-year and 100k miles factory warranty. I drove her from CA to NC, it was a bonding experience. :)

JM&A has been very good to me. I think they only sell through dealers though. You can try to save but these cars are finicky. I am not saying this is typical but a coolant pipe busted on the freeway and the heat killed my engine. $25,000 job, $17,000 for a new engine from Jaguar. I had to pay about $2,500. Not sure about the final bill on this trip but the starter went out and they are paying for part of it. Engine replacement isn't common but Jags don't take heat too well and a coolant pipe busting on freeway 25 miles outside of Austin Texas on a June day was even to need a new engine. So it isn't unheard of. Even suspension can be expensive with the air shock system. Shock mounts costs me about $800 but I think the air shocks are over $1,000 a piece. I paid about $2,000 I think for 2 years gold plus which covers most things but isn't an exclusionary policy like the top level. It could have been $2,500. My bet is you will probably spend more on warranty covered items in 4 years than $5K. Read it careful though, Jaguar itself has done things with me like the part is warrantied but the $4K in breaking down the engine to get timing to replace tensioners isn't covered. So we will pay for the $550 tensioners but not the $4K + to get to the part.

Ok, going to chime in here- I know it isn't a Jag, but it was a after market Extended warranty from a 3rd party. When we lived on the left coast back in 94-98 we purchased a 1992 Caddy Deville, the new one with the all aluminum V8 block. It had 10k miles on it as it was a 1992. It rode great, wife drove from LA to Texas and never got tired, one day we noticed a oil spot in the garage, took it to the local SoCal Caddy dealer and! dealer says entire engine had to be replace! Yep, whole long block! Apparently "the engine was destroyed by the asphalt on the freeways" it had EATEN into the case of the engine causing oil to come out! Now, I am not real big on WHACKO ideas (Yet), but that was so far out to even consider it real! So, we had made 3-4 payments on the warranty and called them up, they sent an inspector to the dealer who "Verified" the problem! Ends up we paid ZIP! NADDA, NOTHING and got a brand new long block installed FREE! (well we did pay for the extended warrantee) but really! The car only had 20k miles on it.....so I am still in favor of getting one when you buy a high value car like a Jag or Caddy or BMW.... Just my two cents.....

You needed an extended warranty for a '92 in '94? How long was the factory warranty?
Wasn't that the Northstar engine that GM had to eat the cost of a lot of aluminum block problems on anyway?

Also, since that was nearly 30 years ago, I bet boxcars to boxtops that that aftermarket warranty company is long gone by now.

It could of been in 96, still a long time ago and yes that was the Northstar engine....But the car went like a bat out of you know where and rode like we were sitting on the living room couch! Great road car.....

If you get an extended warranty, make sure you go through all the covered and excluded items exhaustively and make your decisions from there. As a JLR service advisor, I have the easiest time dealing with the JLR extended warranty, of course, beyond CPO coverage. Other companies have been a fight from my end, and many items that you would think would be covered, and are expensive, are excluded.
