X305 starter engages itself while running
 

...and wipers, hazards, lights, and some motors under hood, all random and without obvious connection.

To be clear, car starts normally, then randomly engages starter, hazards, lights, wipers and a few other things without user input.

Could be moisture, but what module controls all those circuits?

BPM?

For the starter to engage the BPM must provide a ground at pin 33 for the starter relay to close

As the wiper relay also gets a ground by the BPM pin 27

Hazards the same BPM

The common factor is the BPM but has different input wires to command the different subsystems

Before sourcing a replacement BPM notice the case ground that from experience on other things has an effect on module function

Sounds like the BPM then. I'll dig it out and check for moisture.

An easier try is a hard reset that will get it to zero state and go from there if somehow it went nuts mid drive

Yeah, tried the hard reset. Same problem intermittently. Recent heavy rain, puddle on passenger floorboard, so likely culprit. Thanks for resource and confirmation.

With regards to the puddle, might be worth taking off the scuttle cover at the base of the windscreen my friend.

When I had my windscreen taken out recently I found corrosion (and a few holes) under the scuttle cover, so may be best to check just in case. '96 car.

I guess the water and muck gets trapped under there.

Yeah, that's on the list. It was parked under a messy tree for a few years by the previous owner so we went through all the drains and unplugged them, but didn't get around to the cabin air system.
Added a space heater to start drying it. Now its dry in the passenger footwell but there is condensation everywhere else. Gotta love living in the PNW without enough garage space.

Tell me about it my friend, I have a drive but no garage so all the work I have to do is outside. Great fun doing a service underneath the car with your legs pointing into the road....

The car has a cover which obviously shields it from the elements a little but I'm certainly looking forward to the warmer (or drier) months! lol.

Fingers crossed you resolve your issue quickly, these are certainly lovely cars to own (when they behave :) )

I changed out the BPM:
Everything except the starter behaved properly.

I checked the starter solenoid wire and it wasn't energized.
I guess the solenoid was welded closed... I tapped on it and it released.
Everything works normally now.

Old BPM was full of moisture.
