Driveshaft Center Bearing Removal
 

I'm planning on replacing my jurid giubos and center bearing on my driveshaft soon. After replacing my engine and transmission mounts I still have a very very tiny vibration felt in the seat of my pants at idle, and since those parts have never been replaced (@165k miles now), I figure its worth a shot.

My concern is that I can't find any info on how the center bearing assembly detaches from the drive shaft. Does it just slip off the end once you disconnect the two sections of the shaft or is there something more to it?

The Driveshaft does separate, but I'm not sure if its the center carrier is available separate, I think you have to buy the whole driveshaft.

It says that the driveshaft must be replaced as a whole unit. At least this way the donuts at the ends will get replaced as well. Does this vibration get worse as you drive, or only at idle?

CAUTION:
To preserve 'drive line' refinement, individual parts, other than fixings, MUST NOT be renewed. In the event of any balance or driveshaft component related concern, the complete assembly must be renewed. Under no circumstances may the flexible coupling be removed from the driveshaft (or its fixings be loosened). Do not drop or subject the driveshaft to damage.


NOTE:
All driveshaft assemblies are balanced. If undercoating the vehicle, protect the driveshaft, universal joints and the rear drive axle shafts to prevent over-spray of the undercoating material.


The driveshaft consists of the following:

• A two piece welded steel tube with a splined center slip joint.
• A universal joint.
• A center bearing.
• Two flexible joints.

Universal Joint
The universal joint is:

• a lubed-for-life design and requires no lubrication in service.

It's been pretty well established that the center bearing and jurid couplers can be purchased and replaced separately, and has been done by members here in the past. However, upon further thought, I'm not so sure the driveshaft is what's causing the tiny vibration because it doesn't go away when in neutral. Maybe subframe bushings are transmitting engine vibration through the body...

Its possible at this point they may be available separate for the X350, I know for the earlier XJ's they were available separately aftermarket. I agree, I don't think the driveshaft is going to cause a vibration at idle. Is the engine running rough by any chance?

One thing to keep in mind is the speed you are experiencing this vibration at. Most driveshaft vibration starts about 35~45 MPH, and much higher frequency than tire/wheel imbalance, and tire and wheel vibrations at 55~70 MPH. If the vibration is felt at stop, it is neither.
