Dear Forum,
I have recently had to unbolt and suspend my Steering Rack out of the way in order to try to remove my A/C Compressor; this has resulted in the Pump to Rack pipe being strained causing the leak you can see below; I am guessing there are 'O' Rings in there for renewal?
If I undo this joint (obviously with the engine off), will there still be pressure there, or could I simply try to block off the pipe and its corresponding hole in the Rack to reduce loss of fluid? Or will I need to drain the system and if so, could I do it from here?
Seems like a pretty straight forward way.
You exchange a lot of fluid in the process.
Or you could catch and filter the fluid, with a coffee strainer, for reuse.
Remember this is just a guess on my part
Yes there are O-rings on that joint but unlikely that they were damaged during steering rack removal. Therefore I would first determine where the oil is actually leaking. I would rather suspect the clamping of the hose on the tube or a crack in the tube. So clean everything and move the steering from left to right with the engine ideling, paying attention to where exactly the oil is coming out.
With the engine not running the system is depressurized. Nevertheless, oil escapes when the lines are opened, so it is better to empty the reservoir before. The oil should probably be changed anyway, as far as i remember 1 ltr. ATF is pretty enough.
The OP is in Dubai, chances are good the original o-rings have long ago dried and hardened due to heat.
It is an easy swap as mentioned in previous replies. There is only about a quart of fluid in the power steering system, so just let it drain into a pan and replace with fresh when done.
I recently did mine as part of a drain and refill of the system. Jaguar could not tell me which part numbers were correct for the 2 size o-rings on these lines. However, if you have an assortment of o-rings you should be able to find suitable replacements.
