Removing rear door trim
Are there any tips about removing the rear door trim, with the deadlocks engaged? I have a lock fault on my 2004.

Do you mean that both doors are double locked and will not open?
If so did they fail at the same time or one by one? The door locks can fail and the driver is not aware until someone opens a door and the alarm goes off when all doors should be locked. |
One door is double locked and will not unlock. While all the other doors are locking and unlocking fine, one isn't. I suspect the actuator is kaput, or the supply to it has been interrupted. I need to get the trim off to investigate.
I'm still not sure even if I get the trim off, there is a way to then open the door. I've looked at the factory workshop manual; its not a lot of help.. |
Most likely micro switch has failed but double locked is a real problem!
I had this problem but did not want to dive in to repair. I kept trying to open it over a period of time with the remote and I was delighted when it opened then I repaired it. NEVER USE DOUBLE LOCKING Try it? |
Having had a closer look, possibly my goose is cooked. There is a single cross head screw on the underside of the trim that I don't think I can get a bit onto. I may have to defer to a garage, even if they end up having to demolish the inner trim, they could probably do it in a more intelligent way.

Pull out the plastic storage pocket, you can get at the screw then. In fact its not a screw but a plastic 'scrivet' so you should be able to push it out from the top once you've removed the storage pocket.

Next up, with the trim off, whats needed to be done to release the double locked latch.

Well, there is good news, the lock decided to unlock, and stayed unlocked. Onwards with the lock replacement/investigation

Well, that turned out to be an incredibly easy job. Original actuator looks brand compared to the used part, which works. So will take a closer look at the original, to see if it truely lunched.
But now left with a mystery. Beforehand, I had a unreliable window, on the same door. Local Jaguar specialist diagnosed I needed a new window regulator, and wanted £500. Sod that, got hold of a used one. I was going to fit that as well, but was defeated by the white clip attaching it to the glass. In any case, the original, with the trim off, worked perfectly, so I greased up the runners and cables, working the grease into the mechanism, and refitted the trim. Window is back to misbehaving, ie. doesn't open full on one touch, opens fully eventually on holding the switch down )(doesn't make any difference front or rear button. And the same closing it, a real struggle. I'm guess there is a break in the wire, and the number one suspect area is where the power cable for the window is clamped to the door frame; its actually trapped between the frame and the weathershield. Jaguar were clearly aware of the possibility, and had wrapped some extra insulation at this spot. 15 years on, and you can see this spot is polished, ie. its moving against that weather shield. So will investigate, repair if necessary, but also maybe move the cable to behind the window motor. |
