The final bill should be way less than this. COmpressors are available even at Jaguar dealers for araound £300, (or they were at Royles of Wilmslow in 2010), and fitting time is around 30-40 minutes. Compressors also available on the internet too.so am expecting a £600 bill to have it replaced

Ah the joys of living in the S.E.where everything is more expensive, as I find on my trips back home to Liverpool. Unfortunately I won,t get any discount on parts and labour so hourly rates are probably higher and VAT is higher than 2 years ago so I suppose I have to expect to pay more

Well, there is an independent shop who does my servicing (XJK Jaguar in Newcastle-under-Lyme), and they're not far from Jn 15 of the M6. I am sure it will be cheaper with them than a Jaguar main agent, and if you want a reasonable main agent, Royles of Wilmslow will give 10% discount on spares, and 25% off labour if you join their Regency CLub, (car must be 4 years or more old).
