Default What should I do with my 2001 XJ8?

Silver and Black. 115,000 miles. Clean title. Clean interior. All chains/tensioners replaced at 83,000. XJ6 chrome wheels with P6 tires. Alpine stereo, Pioneer and Clarion speakers. Keenwood amp. Trunk spoiler (best $38 I've ever spent on ebay). New front brakes and synthetic oil/filter change. All new ignition coils.

A few scratches hear and there. No dents though. Annoying rattle inside the dash on passenger side. Small oil leak around Drivers side valve cover. Tranny doesn't immediately drop into 1st gear at stop signs. You have to wait a tick or two before taking off. Yikes!

This transmission issue has been happening for about 2-3 years now. It's not getting any worse and I've still been using it as my dailey driver. I really love this car but just bought a 2004 XJ8. Got a great deal on a Salvage title (all cosmetic).

Is this thing worth anything? Would anyone want to by a car with a transmission issue like this? I can't part it out (no room). What should I ask for it? $2500? $2000? $1500? Donate it (I don't itemize). Wrecking yard? Used/rebuilt trans then sell it?

Any thoughts?

Thanks! Gene

Trans problem sounds like it could be the main pressure regulating valve in the transmission valve body is worn. Its quite common and I wouldn't drive it like that because if it ever sticks at the wrong time and causes excess pressure, it could rupture a drum. If that's what it is, its about a $750 diy fix to install a reconditioned valve body. Search for threads on the Sonnax valve upgrade. If it fails catastrophically, its a few thousand dollars. Or it could just be low on fluid, but I assume you would have had that checked. Fixed, maybe its worth $4-$5K depending on condition. As-is, any buyer MUST assume it needs a $3,000+ transmission job and offer accordingly.

Thanks for the help. Looks like I posted this in the wrong forum. Oop's .

Like I said, I've been driving it like this for 2-3 years so I guess I've been real lucky? I am very easy with it. Wait a second or two before pulling away seems to give it enough time to drop into first.

Anyway, I did have the fluid replaced a couple of years ago, although I thought this was a sealed transmission.

Every mechanic I've talked to about the problem simply said "rebiuld the transmission". Even Jag specialists. None of them suggested just replacing the valve body. Guess I'll keep asking as I'll have to have someone else do it for me.

For under $1k I'll do it before selling. I don't want to sell someone else my problem (I'd make a lousey used car saleman) and I really want to keep the car on the road. It's a wonderfull machine but it was time for something else.

Thanks again. Gene
