Default XJ8, 4.2, 2005 Alternator Replacement

Hello Jag Enthusiasts,

Need some advice on replacing an alternator on a 2005 XJ8. The JTIS states to raise the engine and remove the steering gear. I have read posts where some have removed through the wheel well. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Ray

Also, where is the best site to order an alternator rebuild kit for the 05 XJ8? Is the alternator externally or internally regulated?

Thanks again,
Ray

I was very recently looking at diodes and found this:

Alternator Repair, bad alternator, diagnose symptoms repair problem

They look like alternator repair specialists.

I saved huge amounts of $$$ buying my Bosch Alt from parts geek. It has a better warranty than the dealer. Was the EXACT match. Yes it was a rebuilt, but by Bosch. Most people dont know that even alternators purchased from dealers are rebuilt. The only way to get a NEW Alt is with the new car. This is true for most MFR's.
I did have the dealer install it after I pre tested it. Labor $$ wasn't too bad, considering the hassle to get it out and in. Yes the front end has to be dropped, and motor supported from the top. And there is 1 bolt that is a real B*^ch to get back in. Made a rig for my XJ-40 to support the motor from the top that probably would have worked. It was worth it to pay them to R/R. Got a loaner, and was done that day.

Thanks Mark. I am thinking about getting my mechanic to do the job. I have an AC Delco Nippodenso rebuilt alternator coming. $227 - $50 CORE = $177. I will post back if I do the job.
