Beautiful mechanic's special

Let me tell you, the thing looks mint and I'm getting it for a steal. It runs and drives with 107k/miles but there are some mechanical defects; and, besides the current issues, I would also like to address items that will become problems in lieu of preventative maintenance.

Will bump with pics when its sitting in my driveway:icon_naughty:

Thank you

I'll post an introduction thread as soon as possible and keep this thread for the work I'll be doing.

Hi Scrypt,

What year and model is the Jaguar you are stealing? We'll look forward to your photos.

We'll also look forward to your introduction so we can give you a good welcome.

Cheers,

Don

Sharp looking, always have been a fan of white cars personally :D

Welcome aboard!

BTW, be careful with that chain wallet I see in one of the photos.

The drivers "cockpit" is pretty tight in the X300 and if you aren't using the auto steering-wheel/drivers-seat retract when you exit the car it is very easy to drag something like that chain across the bottom of your wheel and then have a disappointing moment. Ask me how I know.... :icon_confused:

It will also chew up the seat leather in short order.

.

Scrypt 04-21-2015 03:59 PM

Thanks for the warning.

The wheel and seat memory work perfectly but I was still thinking what I should do about the seats; they're so nice, even without my chains I would be concerned about wear. I know some brands of seat covers actually hasten damage.

One of the first things I'm going to do is put some light colored window tints and a dash cover to help keep the sun out, but me and my friends are going to take this thing out allot and I really would like to take extra measures to protect them.

I would also like to wrap the steering wheel but again not sure about the styles/brands ability to protect rather than deform or mar.

Drivers side mirror motor is bad but passenger side is OK; rear view mirror is cracked/green (light dimming?)

Clock, AC, radio (kind of) bad

There's a necktie in that box and I forgot to take the keyring out of my center console :D

We have its Twin in a XJR, you have a great looking car. What did you have to give for it?

al_roethlisberger 04-21-2015 04:53 PM

You'll want to have your auto-dimming mirror repaired soon before the dimming fluid leaks out and destroys your interior. Fortunately it is relatively cheap at about $100:

Radio repair info, will run about $250 from Southern Electronics:

Here's some info on the clock, can also be repaired for about $100:

If your radio won't come on or is unresponsive to one or more buttons, that is a common failure mode. However, if all the buttons work and it sounds like crap, you need speakers. It is almost unheard of in these cars to run across one with the speakers it left the factory with that are not rotted/blown.

Regarding seats/steering wheel, just stay on top of it with regular applications of a quality leather cleaner and conditioner and enjoy, rather than cover it up. I use the Gliptone line, others have their faves.

Very nice, Shelby; do you have links to images?

.. and thank you, isn't it though; I can barely believe it but she wound up gifting it to me :icon_imnotworthy:

It was her fathers and God rest his soul. I'm helping her clean out his apartment and she was going to keep it until looking at the prices for maintenance and repair, I offered her $1,000 down and $100 a month for the next 12 months, which she accepted; in the end, I guess it was because I refused payment for my services and perhaps being that I would take, if not equal, then at least adequate care of the vehicle.

Thanks for the links, Al; I will remove the rear-view mirror immediately!

Ahol, the radio does turn on and the volume and tuner do work; I did not try any other buttons. I won't go as far as to say that the sound is good, but it is not horrible; it just really isn't up to my standards and I'm not sure that a tape-deck can be :icon_razz:

My mother owns a 2000 GMC Yukon XL Denali that you see in the night shots, the drivers seat bolster is completely dilapidated so maybe I'm just paranoid

Great bargain!! Sybesma's Electronics in Holland, MI is the original mfgr. of the mirror. They offer to rebuild your mirror for around $100. If you can do without it for about a week, I would suggest getting yours rebuilt, because Sybesma's no longer uses the green fluid, and getting a replacement from another source would probably just allow the problem to repeat. I had both my XJ6 & XK8 mirrors done that way.

Scrypt 04-23-2015 11:25 AM

That is absolutely the way to go; thanks!

All's well that ends well:icon_mrgreen:

Noticed the sunroof isn't responding; already found the thread I need to follow, I'll be on that tonight:icon_headbang:

Scrypt 04-23-2015 10:36 PM

Got the sunroof working; must have just been a loose connection, cause all I did was poke around a little:icon_banana:
