Fuel Economy
 

My 1996 XJ6 (U.S.version, 4.0L) gets about 27 MPG on the highway, but only about 16 around town. Just wondering how this fits with others' experience.

I guess it would be close enough average. I wouldn't expect a 1900kg car with 4.0l engine to very economical :D check out the thread about DIY engine modification, there's some figures there mate ;)

Sounds about right to me.

If it makes you feel any better the supercharged versions fare substantially less well :-)

As mentioned, the weight of the car is a real penalty in city driving. Lots of energy needed to get the old girl rolling over and over again in stop-n-go traffic

Yeah, I guess it is pretty much what you should expect, it's just that I never paid much attention to it before. Although I've had the car for 5 years it was never my daily driver until recently when I retired my 17 year old Buick Park Avenue. (It still ran great, but was rusting badly.)

I get about the same from my 3.2

I get a little better, but not much - 18.8 lately according to the trip computer.

On a recent week long holiday (a day of driving to get there, pootling around town most days and then a day driving back again, via the JEC International Jaguar Weekend) I got 26 mpg (UK) / 21.5 mpg (US) out of a couple of tank-fulls.

I think my worst tank average was 19 mpg (UK) / 16 mpg (US) but we had left it idling quite a bit trying to diagnose a dodgy fuel pump.

My standard 1995 XJ6 3.2 would drive you all green with envy.

At the worst(ish) I've gotten about 15 mpg going about short drives in city traffic. On the highway I've averaged around 23 mpg (mind you this is doing 70-90+ mph).

All figures are subject to error due to my memory. The car used in testing was a 1997 Xj6L with 4.0 L

So far, about 15 mpg is the BEST I have seen!

Hope I can quickly figure out how to improve MPG or purchase stock in Shell or Exxon...

Lovely smooth ride, however. Almost makes up for dismal inefficiency...

The official ratings were 14mpg city & 21mpg highway. I only get 12.5 city(and that's babying the throttle), but get a whopping 28 hwy. A disparity that great puzzles the hell out of me. Anything I should be looking at, or is that pretty close to the experience of most?

Sounds a bit on the high-side for hwy from my experiece. 24 is the best I've done on Strictly highway. My commute is about 50% highway and I get 20-21.5 depending on traffic and whether I idle a bunch - Kid school duty, maintenance or other such fragmetary orders as I may draw from time to time. I've never run an entire tank on city-only. I've put 60K + on it and the worst I've recorded is 18.1. Best 24.1. I used to average 21 1/2 but that has dropped about 1mpg with all the road-works on my commute.
