Pros and Cons to a Jaguar XJ X300
Hello all!
I'm new to this Forum - my question is, what are the pros and cons to owning a Jaguar XJ6 300? If I did buy one, it would be my first Jag, so I'd like to know what I'd be getting myself into.
In the modest amount of research I was able to do, there seemed to be a general consensus that this was a good DIY repairs car, but I ask you all, the experts.
My first choice would be an XJ6 in the Vanden Plas/Daimler trim, but am interested in the base level, or even an S or X-Type Jag - which would be the all round best for a first time Jag?
Thanks for your time!

Firstly Welcome.

The X300 would be "about" 20 years old at best. Not a major issue, but age is age, and rubber components will be showing age related wear.
I have had many Jags, and the X300 would be the most reliable, out of the box, and easy to maintain, for any human, in my opinion.
The S or X are TOTALLY different animals.
I ALWAYS suggest, find a version of the car you like, drive it at least 50kms, then find the next suspect, do the same, and so on. The one that "fits" is the car for you.
Both my S Types are the best for me at this stage of life.
I drove my old X300 yesterday (serviced it for the current owner), and found it uncomfortable, and just not as "fitting" as my Black Beast, but then I am old, and riddled with Arthritis, so maybe I am unfair????. We did well over 100000kms in that X300 in 4 years, and found it awesome.
The move to the S Types was the next step for us.
I still miss the XJ-S something fierce, but I simply cannot get in one now, so I moved on.
You can read "War and Peace" dialogue about all 3 models, but until you get "Bum in seat" for some serious miles, it is all only theory.

From my experience, and I am probably younger than most, not all of you, having grown up when cars where built to last this is one of the last examples I've seen. The craftsmanship and quality are better than a BMW, the styling is unique (here in SoCal everyone has a BMW or now an Audi). I get compliments on the Jag all the time. They are generally easy to work on considering the 4,000 pound size. Parts are cheap, most notably, used OEM parts.
The only down side to me is, unlike previous vehicles I have owned, there isn't a massive depth of information, aftermarket know how, DIY modifications, etc. compared to other vehicles I have owned Ranger, 5.0 Mustang, Audi A4, GMC Yukon, Mercedes E300D, Audi S4, Toyota Land Cruiser, Subaru Legacy Outback there were so many more of them sold and therefore worked on, forums posted on, locals with those cars and associated tools in your area. etc. That lends itself to almost any issue being identified rather quickly. That's not to say that doesn't happen here, I just think being a British car with limited service mechanics around and real inside knowledge, as opposed to other brands is the only frustration for me. While this forum is a treasure, the downside to the X300 to me is the sheer lack of volume of information out there. On the other hand, it is also what makes it unique, fun and a bit of a challenge. I enjoy keeping my kitty car looking good and running smooth.

The X300 combines a lot of the qualities of the classic XJ series with modern performance, handling and comfort. First off the styling is superb. Long , Low, Wide. I find the greenhouse to be just perfect, the round headlamps fairing into the hood , combined with that classic grille and leaper, Has there ever been a more beautiful saloon? The interior is just gorgeous. The engine is the apex of Jaguar six cylinder development. I guess I sound like a fan.
The other best thing is that even though the car is a modern Classic, they are not so old that there is a shortage of good running, well maintained examples for sale. Buy a good one, with a well maintained interior and good paint. You will not regret it, There are lots of rough X300s out there and they are very cheap. A good car will probably run at least twice these asking prices, but will still be a bargain. I found a very nice '97 that needs some little things but runs great with an ice cold a/c unit. I have put over 5,000 miles since I bought it in March, including an 1,800 mile trip up to Washington state.
My XJS well, It wasn't a up and running car when purchased. The motor is good but it needs a tranny. I am taking my time on getting this car back on the road. It's a good car and it was a very good deal. I wish I had the money to get it fixed right away but patience is a virtue. Good luck on your search.
