Repairing rear wheel arches

Hello everybody,

Here is an update on my 96 XJ6 "restauration". My rear wheel arches were very rusted and not presentable.

I did not wanted to spend too much money on this car since it will never be perfect and it is a high-miler, and I also wanted to learn how to fix bodywork.

So here are some photos stage by stage on how I did. I am very pleased with the result altough the colour match is far from being perfect ! I have used spray can kit from ebay and the matching is not great, despite being the right colour code.

The initial situation

Rust being removed - Nice holes

First skim of filler - Not very nice

Then sanding and sanding again, filler and filler again

Guide coat - I used cheap paint but I rather recommend powders since sandpaper is getting dirty very fast

Primer ! And then wet sanding again

And finally paint and varnish !
I used 2 cans of paint and 1 of varnish. Wet sanded between each layer.

The end result !
The picture is not great... Supermarket parking lot, but a Jaguar is a democratic car in the end :-)

Thanks for watching

Any comments welcome !

Great Job! Although my wheel arches are not as desperate as yours were, just a few small pin size rust bubbles, if I keep the car it will eventually need the replacement as well. I have seen some after market chrome applique arches but not too sure how that would look! Your work was very well done! Congratulations on the outcome. https://www.adamesh.co.uk/jaguar-x30...ms-4313-p.asp#
