X300 4.0 Oil capacity

Unless I'm suffering from word blindness in which case forgive me as I cannot find the answer in my handbook, so can someone please tell me the engine oil capacity for my 4.0 X300?
Thanks.

Brian

You need exactly 8l to fill up, once you've done draining and fitted a new oil filter.

Thanks for the rapid response. To clarify, is that 81 Litres?

7 to 8 litres

I doubt there exsists a car engine that'd take 81 litres ;)

8 litres will fill up the filter and get the oil level exactly to maximum on dipstick. That's a fact.

I haven't tested it yet, but I think 7 liter would do the same, except that oil level would only get to the min on the dipstick (meaning you'd be running low on oil, not good). I'm not sure on that one though, as according to some posts, difference between min&max is 2l, but I'm quite certain it's only 1l.

Thanks. Told you I had word blindness! Read 8l as 81!! Thought that seemed odd (and expensive) to say the least!
Thanks again. Appreciated.

Thanks for that, won't read that as 78 litres!

al_roethlisberger 05-06-2015 10:59 AM

Think it is 8.5 Quarts total.

EZDriver 05-06-2015 05:32 PM

I always put in 8.5 quarts and it seems just right. And I think the manual says that also.

Sorry - I rotated the photos in Photobucket before pasting links..honest!

David, how can this be? "not sure"..yet "quite certain" at the same time and in the same relationship? I can't reconcile it, but 1 Litre = 1.0567 US quarts, so according to the manual and my own in-house experimentation....I hate to break it to you...but you are quite mistaken.

Biffta, don't cop to misreading....81 litres is fuel tank capacity...say you were temporarily disoriented....pilots have been getting away with that peculiar substitution for "Lost" for ages :-)

8.0 L / 8.5 Qts:

The manual squares with the experience I have made: it takes one quart to move from bottom of the range (x-hatched) to the "M" and an additional quart to move from "M" to top of the range:

I took time to document this weekend's top-up:

Here we are just a fuzz above the min X-hatch mark:

Addition of (near-as-makes-no-difference) 1 US Quart* later, and I'm a fuzz short of the "M" mark:

*Using a gallon jug, filled to just above the 1 Qt mark - dumped it all in and let it drain a few mins, not really sure how much remained clinging to the sides of the jug.

David7 05-10-2015 07:20 PM

Damn, that's doesn't sound good for me then :/

I went from max to min in just 2500km, thinking that was 1l of oil.... now, knowing it's actually 2l, I think I *might* have a problem...

I'll try to get the engine inspected tommorow, as I saw 3-4 drops of oil on the garage floor today.

aholbro1 05-10-2015 08:05 PM

Mine went through it pretty fast when I used to run 10W-30.
5W-40 stays home a lot better.
Popular leak spot is a few O-rings at the cooler near the oil filter.

David7 05-10-2015 08:19 PM

Was on 5w-30 before, it's the same as on 10w-40 now. Leak's comming from the right side of the engine (sitting in the car and looking in the driving direction), so exactly the opposite as the oil filter...
