Default 2000 xj8 4.0 replacing heads

hey everybody, i took off my heads because of bad seats but i have another set of heads i took to the machine shop to go thru them my question is, where should the no#1 piston be at and is like a ford on the front pass. side and how would i install the heads then the cam's and tenstioner's i'm a dummy please help.

I would start by downloading the Jaguar Technical Information System (JTIS) that can be found in the sticky above. It is the complete service manual on these cars. Try that and then come back with any specific questions you may have.

To set the timing up, you need a couple of specialist tools to do it correctly. It is nothing like a Ford or earlier Jag engines.

First is to get the crank in the correct position, to do this a dummy crank position sensor replaces the sensor itself.

This sets the crank at 45 deg after t.d.c. The heads will need to be built up with the cams installed. The cams have flats on them for the other special tools to lock them in relation to the crank position. Once these have been taken care of, you can install the tensioners and chains, as per threads on here.

You have some reading up to do, and some tools to locate.

thank's guys i made a locking deal for the crank and i can make the cam locking tool as well,. but when i get the heads back i will have to take the cams back off to install the heads how will that work?. i will download the jtis still i definitely don't want to screw this up i tear up enough junk.
