Dropped valve seat
I have a 2000 XJ8 with 130k miles. Motor overheated and it dropped at least 1 valve seat as per my analysis. Question is. Should all seats be replace or just the bad one, or maybe 2. Since I have to pull 1 head, I will just pull both, which leads me to the next question. Back in the day, valve jobs were easy and straight forward. I m replacing the chains and guides as well. From the opinion of experienced Jaguar enthusiasts, should I pull both heads or just fix the 1 seat and have a beer. Any response is well appreciated. Ordered the tools and parts, so I have time to ponder |
I personally would do them all plus check for any warping of cylinder heads.

I would suggest locating replacement cylinder heads - far easier on the wallet and also carry out a timing chain tensioner job while the engine is down - unless they've been taken care of already.
The main reason for head swap is an over temp event on these usually leads to further valve seat problems, but it's just a case of running the numbers and figuring out which route is cheaper and faster with the least risk. |
I would find a complete AJ27 engine and drop it in. Lots of engines under $1000 in salvage yards.
Unless you just like working on engines?? bob |
+1 Bob, it is just a ticking bomb if it got hot enough to drop a valve seat.

Thanks for the quick replies. I'm leaning to do both heads and chains. I'll check the block deck for straightness and the bores visually, any problems there, I'll be heading to the bone yard. Thanks again |
Dropped valve seat - completed
Thanks for the replies before I dug into it. Pulled heads and replaced all seats. $10 each. Put on new chains and tensioners. A few items that being the first time I've gotten that far into the motor. Buy the correct tools,- cam hold down, crank lock and crank balancer puller. Bought online for $380. I destroyed the crank sensor getting it out, the overheat ruined the cam sensors. Throwing lean codes on both banks, I found a vacuum line off and also replaced the MAF sensor. All is good and happy to be driving the baby again. Total cost with valve job, seats, tools, gaskets etc about $1800. Thanks again |
I'm in the middle of re-building top half of AJ26 engine. How did you manage to torque down the Crank bolt (300+ nM)?

if you don’t have air a cordless 1/2 high torque some extensions a swivel, deep 24 and some electrical tape so you don’t send your socket flying |
